Derek’s eyes drift over toward the kitchen door. “Your girl met the one next door yet?”

“I think so. She mentioned something about someone named Char? Said she was really sweet.”

“She mention anything else about her?” Derek asks, his expression suddenly sharp.

“No. But I’m guessing you could go ask, if you wanted. Don’t you direct that house, too?”

Derek’s lips press into a thin line. “Maybe another time. I’m going to get some shut eye, and then I’m going to run through the tape from last night. You better hope there’s no other rule breaking, or I’ll be giving you a pink slip, get it?”

“I get it.” I try not to remember the way my hands circled around Haven right before the shoot started tonight. Once Derek sees that, I might be done.Worth it, I think to myself fiercely. Anything that means I get to touch Haven is fucking worth it.

Unaware of my rebellious thoughts, Derek points at me once more for emphasis, and then steps out the door.

Almost as soon as the door closes, a yawn sounds from behind me, and a sleepy-eyed Haven steps into the kitchen. My stomach clenches as her warm lemon scent fills the room. My cock hardens as I take in the little blue sleep shorts and matching tank top she’s wearing. Fuck, she’s tempting.

My lust is tempered only by the anger that fills my soul as I take in her puffy black eye.

As if she can read my mind, Haven chuckles and points at it. “So much for being camera ready, right?”

“You look beautiful,” I say, my voice rawer than I intended.

Haven looks startled, and a smile curls over her lips. “Well that’s a lovely thing to say. How are you, Arlo? How’s your hand? I read once that hitting someone can hurt you more than it hurts them. Though in this case, I think that’s unlikely.”

I smile at her. “My hand is fine. How are you feeling? You need anything for that shiner?” I step closer and put a hand on her cheek, tilting her head to the side so I can look at it more closely.

Haven chuckles. “No, I think I’m good. You think our viewership’ll go up because of the fight?”

“Not sure about that,” I say with a sigh. “Derek was just here.”

“I thought I smelled him,” Haven says, wrinkling her nose.

“He doesn’t smell good to you? He’s an alpha.”

“So? Alphas are just people. Some of them smell good, some of them smell bad. Haven’t you noticed that?”

“I guess so… but I never really thought about it.”

“Well maybe you should do some online tutorials for y—mydynamic,” Haven says, her tone changing slightly as Reese appears in the doorway.

“Fuck, look at your eye,” he says, stepping closer. Haven lets him take her chin in his hand so he can examine her. My heart stutters as the two of them look at each other, him possessive and her… intrigued. I wonder what the two of them would be like together. How they would move. How it would feel to be in the bed beside them…

“Arlo, you see this shit?” Reese asks, still looking at Haven’s eye.

“Yeah, I saw it,” I say. “I hate it.”

“What are we going to do about it?” Reese asks tightly.

“You’re not going to do a damn thing about it,” Haven says, pushing his hand away, and pointing her finger at him and then at me. “I’m serious. You already beat the shit out of those guys. That’s enough now. The last thing any of us need is for you to get kicked out. We’re a team.”

A quiet settles over us. “A team,” Reese repeats, glancing over at me. “Is that what we are?” his eyes glitter, and my heart skips a beat.

“When it comes to Haven, I think we are,” I reply.

I’m not stupid enough to believe that Reese could ever forgive me for the role I played in his arrest. But being on the same team? Well, it feels like progress to me.
