Reese moves his hips, and I cry out. Haven shivers, her eyes bright.

“Come to us, Haven,” I say, panting out my breath. “Be with us.”

Haven bites her lip. “I-I want to, I really do, but…” Tears form in her eyes, and she shakes her head, turning back toward the door.

With a low growl, Reese pulls out of me. I would weep a denial if I didn’t feel so strongly that I need to be with Haven. We both do. We need to comfort her, tell her how important she is.

I get off the bed and move behind her while Reese pulls her tight against his chest. My weeping cock presses between her ass cheeks, and she draws in her breath sharply.

“I want what’s best for you, Haven,” Reese says, his voice rumbling with alpha dominance. “Do you know that?”

“I believe that you think that’s true. I just think you’re wrong about what I need. And after what you said the other day…”

She trails off. I send Reese a questioning look over her head. What did he say to her, exactly? That he didn’t want her? It’s hard for me to imagine.

Reese’s expression is grim. “I shouldn’t have… fuck, Haven, you know what I said isn’t true, right?”

She pushes against his chest, shaking her head. “Of course I don’t know that,” she sobs. “It was the worst thing you could have said to me. If you said I was mean, or ugly, or just plain stupid, I could have gotten past those things; because I know they’re not true. But you knew how to hurt me. You knew it was the one thing you could say that would make me leave. That’s why you said it.”

Reese’s Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows hard. “Yes. I knew it would hurt.”

“What did you say?” I ask, rubbing my hands up and down on Haven’s arms.

“He said I wasn’t worth it,” Haven whispers. “That I was… pathetic. That it was ridiculous to think that he would want me. He laughed at me.”

My jaw drops open. I look at Reese in shock. “You didn’t,” I say, pulling Haven away from him. He lets her go, looking at us both sadly. This is so much worse than I thought.

“I did. Because I needed to. So you could get here, Haven. So you could see how many options you have. These packs, they’re quality. They’ll take care of you. And that’s something I just can’t do.”

“I didn’t ask you to take care of me, Reese. Stupid alpha bullshit,” Haven says, her voice cracking. “The only thing I wanted was you. Both of you.”

Reese looks back and forth between us. “Look, both of you. You’ve got the wrong idea about me. I’m not a good person. I’m a felon, a feral. I can fuck you both until you can’t breathe. But that’s it, do you get me? This is the only thing I can do for you. When it comes to choosing a pack, you’re better off leaving this room and never looking back. That goes for you, too, Arlo.”

“Reese—” I start, but he holds up his hand.

“What are you doing, fighting this? I’m telling you what I want out of this relationship: fucking, plain and simple. If that’s not what you want, then you need to find someone else.”

Haven swallows hard. “When someone tells you who they are, believe them,” she says in a cracked voice.

“Exactly,” Reese spits out. “Now you’re starting to get it.”

I grab my pants and pull them on, giving Reese a dirty look. I turn to Haven and cinch her robe closed before reaching for her hand. “Come on,” I say, tugging her toward the door. She follows me limply, as if she’s too worn out to object. I turn the doorknob and escort her out into the hallway.

Before I walk through the door, I turn to look at Reese. “Someday you’re going to regret this, Reese,” I tell him. “And when that day comes, I hope for your sake that it isn’t too late.”

He looks at me sadly, his body half-crumpled as if under the weight of enormous guilt. “You’ll thank me,” he says in a raw voice. “You’ll see.”

I slam the door in his face.

Turning to Haven, I take her hand again, and lead her down the hall toward the dorms. “You’re anything but pathetic,” I tell her sharply. “You have to know that.”

Haven sniffles. “I know it most of the time,” she says. “But when he said it…” She shakes her head. “I’ve just spent so much of my life feeling shabby. Unimportant. And the two of you, you made me feel… special.”

“Because you are special, Haven.”

She offers me a watery smile. “Will you stay with me tonight? The beds here are ok. They’re set up more like nests, but I don’t have anything that smells like you.”

“Of course.” To be honest, I’m relieved; I couldn’t imagine leaving her side right now.
