No, and no, I can only surface on your eighteenth birthday. I’m not sure why your brother had to leave you, Nolen. He whimpered inside my head, sadness flooding through me. Why was he sad? He had never set eyes on my brother. I couldn’t take this anymore. I wanted answers, but I didn’t think I was ready for them.

Changing the subject from the still open wound of my brother, I tried again to move my arms, but they stayed in place. Do you know how long we have been out?

No, because I still need eyes to tell what is going on, like you, he smarted off to me. I shook my head and relaxed; at least I wasn’t going to be alone inside my head. While my body healed, I would have some form of company. I didn’t know how long I had been out, but I understood if I had to be out any longer, Sarge would be able to give me more information on why he’d showed up early.

You are never alone, Nolen; I’ve been here waiting to be reborn, Sarge indicated.

Yeah, well, I’ve felt like it since Archer passed. Sulking as it got quiet again in my head and the slight sense of loneliness returned, I started to drift back off to sleep. Sarge took up residence in the back of my consciousness, curling up, waiting for my body to awaken and be able to move about.

Chapter Three: Scars

When I came out of the medically induced coma the pack doctor put me in, I felt like a thousand wolves had barreled through me. The pack doctor, Leon, told me he expected me to be out for a few more days, even with Alpha blood running in my veins, awakening this early occurred rarely. He kept me two extra days to be sure my vitals stayed stable. During that time, Sawyer came to see me, and he always made sure it was before he had to run.

“Hey! If I have to be up. You have to be up,” he would tell me in-between bites of his light breakfast.

I shook my head, and I knew Sarge laughed in the back of my mind. This would take some getting used to once I left the hospital and rejoined the pack. Today, I would be leaving the pack hospital, which made me happy because these four walls seemed to be closing in on me. I wanted to be able to train and get back into my routine.

The Alpha and Luna had told my parents, and they called me every day once I had awoken to make sure I still lived. It took all the convincing in the world to keep my mother at home. Ever since Archer had passed, she’d become insistent on keeping in touch with me, and now with this incident, she would be even more adamant. I didn’t tell her about the scar that showed prominently on my chest, but I was sure the Alpha here told her. Several nice deep craters over the left side of my chest would be with me till my death.

Grimacing, I slid my shirt over my head, and the motion pulled on the new skin forming over my chest. “How was the party?”

“Oh, I didn’t go. I wanted to show you around, to show you a good time. Some of the other younger wolves convinced my dad into throwing you a recovery party,” he laughed as he finished his meal.

Sawyer is an Alpha too. His wolf is at the edge as well. I can feel his aura, Sarge said to me, and I peered at him out of the corner of my eye.

I rolled my eyes. Yes, he’s an Alpha. What made you think he wasn’t?

Nothing made me think that. He will be beneficial to us; he is part of our destiny, Sarge told me; I could see him more in my mind’s eye but not enough to reveal his coat color.

I turned and grabbed my small bag that had my shredded clothes in it. I should have told them to throw them away. It’s not like I would be wearing them anymore. I sat down in one of the chairs and watched Sawyer down the rest of his water.

It helped when he came around; I had Sarge but having Sawyer there to tell me how things were going during training was exciting. He would complain about not having me there to take some of Beta Adam’s punishment, and I would laugh at him because it would have been worse if I had been there.

“Isn’t it about time for you to be sparring?”

Sawyer turned to me with one of his shit-eating grins, “And who am I supposed to be sparring? My sparring partner is still in the hospital.”

“So, what are you going to do?”

“I don’t have a fucking clue. Beta Adam and my dad have been in meetings ever since those rogues stepped on our territory. The she-wolves are gonna love that scar you on your chest,” he chuckled with a wink.

I shook my head and glanced down at the pinkish color on my chest as I slid an arm into a sleeve. “Naw, man. Girls don’t look at me like that.”

He rounded on me, his face in complete shock, “You are blind! Have you not been paying attention? Some of these she-wolves are pressing you hard, and you are oblivious!”

I sighed, running my hand through my hair and down my face, “If they knew me before, they wouldn’t want anything to do with me.”

The sun rose over the mountains, meaning Sawyer would be late getting to the other wolf waiting on him, and Beta Adam would put him through some crazy shit for his tardiness.

A nurse came into my room and asked if I wanted my breakfast. I nodded, and she brought in the most delicious-looking meal I had seen in a while. Scrambled eggs, sausage links, bacon, pancakes, and skillet potatoes with cheese covered the tray. She also served me O.J. and milk. As she sat it down in front of me, Sawyer seemed to be salivating at the mouth. I thanked her and ravenously dove into the meal.

“Damn, man, they give you the good stuff!”

My eyes were huge as my stomach growled in satisfaction at the pile of food before me, “This is the first non-bland food they’ve given me.”

Sawyer came over and sat on my bed watching me eat. I sighed and handed him one of my sausage links. He took it like he had been starving half his life, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. The doctor, Beta, and Alpha came in just as he stuffed the whole thing in his mouth. His eyes were as big as saucers when he spotted the trio in the room. Beta Adam and his father shook their heads and then looked at me. The beta nodded. “You ready, pup?”

I nodded and downed the milk, grabbing a piece of bacon and a pancake. The rest stayed on my plate in the chair. I walked up to them with Sawyer behind me. The Alpha grinned at me, turned, and walked out of the room. We all followed.
