“It’s not?” Her breathing had become shallow all of a sudden.

“I want to make sure you’re really okay after all that happened today.”

“Oh, yes, I’m fine.” Was that all? It was nice that he was worried about her, but…

“I know you’re saying that, but are you sure?” he asked, using his thumb to tilt her chin up, so she was looking directly at him.

Earlier today in the boardroom, she leaned on him, accepted his proffered comfort because she’d needed it. But tonight…? She was telling the truth when she said she was fine. Tonight, part of her wanted something more than benevolent compassion. She wanted passionate kisses from the man who’d made her body come alive that night they’d spent in the swag together. And the other part was screaming that he was no good for her, he would only break her heart into a million pieces and then leave, and to stay as far away from him as she could.

Oh, God, it was like there were two completely opposite warring personalities residing in her right now.

Mack was still staring at her. He touched her cheek ever so gently.

Every atom in her body demanded that he kiss her. She swayed toward him, unable to resist his tidal pull. A low thrum started deep in her belly.

“I want to kiss you, Bindi. But something tells me I shouldn’t, because it would be taking advantage of you. And I respect you. I don’t want to hurt you any further.”

He respected her? What was that all about? Yes, please, take advantage of me, a loud voice shouted in her head. But another voice said that perhaps he was right. She took a step away, out of his sphere of influence, away from his musky, male aroma and muscular body that drove all logical thought out the window.

Something had changed between them. Ever since Mutt had driven them off the road today and nearly rammed them. Something about the way Mack looked at her had shifted. He was more solicitous, tender, almost. When he spoke to her, the layer of pretense was now stripped away. It was as if he were more present with her now, more truthful.

Bugger. Why had he chosen this moment to suddenly become all chivalrous?
