“Yeah, right. Until the next time you wanted me to cheat, so you could swindle more of your customers out of their hard-earned cash,” he retorted with a snort. It sounded like Clarissa was blaming him for all her woes. Typical, she never liked to admit defeat. Never took responsibility for her actions. Her father’s company was in financial trouble, and it was all her fault.

“If you’d just done what I asked, I wouldn’t be this deep in the shit. I could’ve pulled Bettdorff out of the quagmire and Daddy would—” She cut off mid-sentence and breathed deeply on the other end of the phone.

He gave a wry smile. He’d just love to be a fly on the wall to hear what Clarissa’s daddy had to say about all this. He’d trusted her to take their family money and build up Bettdorff. Now it was going broke, Mack wondered if he was threatening to strip her of the CEO position and regain control himself? Or worse. To disown her.

“This is all your fault,” she ground out, sounding less hysterical now, and more like the ice queen he knew her to be. “I’m warning you, make this little…problem go away, or else.”

“Or else what?” he asked, sarcasm dripping from his tone. She didn’t scare him. He was done with her interfering in his life.

“Or else it’s not going to be just the wheel that falls off your car,” she taunted quietly.

Mack went completely still. Had she just confessed to being involved with the sabotage to his truck? A feeling of surety grew in his guts. That guy who’d threatened him at the rodeo had indeed been connected to Clarissa. He was sure that big fucker had been the one to loosen his wheel lugs now. Shit, he should’ve recorded this call, or something. He needed to pass this information onto Nash. Clarissa was so determined that he was responsible for her life spiraling out of control, she was prepared to kill him to get her revenge. She was completely crazy.

“How is your little girlfriend?” Clarissa went on, her voice silky smooth. “I hear you were both unhurt after your car mysteriously ran off the road. If you want to keep your little slut that way, you should call off your dogs.” With a loud click, Clarissa hung up.

His blood turned to ice in his veins. It was one thing for her to threaten him, but a whole other level of viciousness to threaten Bindi.
