Alex sighed and pushed herself off the bed. She checked the thermostat on the wall. It was chilly in the room. She turned the heat up a little, then sat down at the table. A few minutes later, Kaely pushed the door open, two Styrofoam cups in her hands.

“Doesn’t look too bad for a mix,” she said as she leaned against the door with her shoulder. After it clicked shut, she sat down at the table with Alex, handing her one of the cups.

Alex took a sip. It was hot and surprisingly tasty. “Thanks.”

Kaely nodded. “Look, I don’t want you to feel as if you have to tell me about your dream if you’d rather not. It just always helped me to talk about mine.”

“Who did you talk to?”

“Mostly Noah. He was always available to listen, but he didn’t feel like he had to figure out what they meant. I think down deep we know what our dreams are trying to tell us. We just can’t admit it to ourselves.”

“Maybe. I’ve been reading the Bible. Daniel and Joseph interpreted dreams, and I’m certain I couldn’t have figured those out. Pretty weird.”

“Daniel had a gift, and God used it to bring him to a place of prominence. He was able to bless many people because of it.”

Alex grunted. “Not sure this dream measures up to anything that lofty.”

Kaely grinned. “That’s okay. I once dreamt I created the perfect profile for a prolific serial killer. Everyone thought I was wonderful.”

“Was the killer caught?”

She nodded. “Yeah, a SWAT team broke down the front door of a house and found”—she grinned—“Elmer Fudd.”

“The cartoon character?”

Kaely nodded.

Alex laughed. “So we’re really looking for cartoon characters?”

“I guess so. It would make all this more fun, wouldn’t it?”

“Absolutely. I’m afraid there weren’t any cartoon characters in my dream, though.”

Kaely took a sip of her hot chocolate before saying, “Tell me.”

Alex took a deep breath and told her everything she could remember.

“Wow,” Kaely said. “That’s really interesting. So who do you think the woman represents?”

Alex had an idea, but she wasn’t sure. “I ... I’m not certain.”

Kaely yawned. “Sorry. I don’t know either. Ask God what it means.” She smiled. “If it’s important, He’ll tell you. If not, it might have been the aftereffects of something you ate in the food court.”

“You’re right.” She was disappointed. She really wanted to understand the dream and had hoped Kaely would have some insight. But she couldn’t expect her to know everything. Besides, she was getting sleepy too.

Kaely reached across the table and extended her hand. Alex reached out for it, and when Kaely bowed her head, Alex did the same.

“Lord,” Kaely prayed, “if this dream was from You, please reveal its meaning to Alex. And thanks for loving us and meeting our every need. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.”

Alex mumbled, “Amen,” and then she got up from the table and went to her bed. As she slipped under the covers, she thought about the easy relationship Kaely seemed to have with God. She wanted that too. Would it ever happen?
