“I don’t find them. I only—”

“Please. Don’t insult my intelligence. Without you, dangerous killers would still be walking the streets.”

“Whatever you say.”

He approached Alex. “And now we move on to Alex Donovan, who saved the world from a deadly plague. And what was the name of your little friend? Oh yes. The Train Man. Very dramatic.”

“I absolutely didn’t save the world.”

“You’re right,” he said. “You absolutely didn’t. Supervisory Special Agent Alex Donovan. Brave, true, and loyal.” He put one hand over his heart. “I, Alexandra Donovan, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of which I am about to enter. So help me God.” He moved closer to her. “And you believe that, don’t you, Alexandra?”

“Don’t call me that.”

He straightened up, a look of feigned surprise on his face. “I seem to have touched a sore spot, haven’t I?” He laughed again. “And here you are paired with Kaely Quinn, the legend. I’ll bet she intimidates you, doesn’t she? Are you insecure? Afraid you won’t measure up?” He stared at her. “I can smell the fear in you. The insecurity. You’ll never be as good as she is, and you know it.”

Alex’s heart thudded in her chest, and she couldn’t breathe. “Shut up,” she choked out.

“That’s not true,” Kaely said, disgust dripping from her words. “He’s just trying to weaken you, Alex.”

With effort, Alex dismissed the fear that had tried to overcome her reason. And her training. Kaely’s assessment was right. They both needed to be at their best. She knew they’d defeat him. No doubt in her mind. But when? How long would it take for Logan to find them? What did this man have planned for them?

“You were never really one of us,” Alex said. “You spit on that pledge without hesitation. You’ve killed all these people. You’re a disgrace.”

He glared at her. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. ‘I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.’ But the FBI has no true faith or allegiance to their agents, do they? Don’t you two realize they don’t care about you? That they will turn on you in the end?” He cursed loudly and backed up a few feet. “Neither one of you really understands who they are. You’re ignorant.”

“What are you talking about?” Kaely asked. “You make no sense.”

Kaely was egging him on, trying to get him to talk. They needed time. Time to figure a way out of this on their own—or to give their rescuers a chance to find them.

He shook his head and turned away for a moment. “I know what you’re trying to do,” he said when he faced them again. “You’re stalling for time.” He looked at them with a quizzical expression. It was impossible to see most of his face. The putty from his nose extended to his cheeks. And his jaw had been enlarged as well. His ears were covered, and Alex was pretty sure he was wearing fake eyebrows. She knew who he was, but she wouldn’t let him know that. Not yet. She was afraid he’d grow angry. Feel that she had bested him.

If that happened, she and Kaely would probably die.
