“It has to be him, Alex,” Kaely said. “Doesn’t it?” She turned her gaze back to him. “Wait a minute. You’re not tall enough...”

Alex could tell Kaely was still coming out from under the effects of the drug.

“You’re the man who wanted to prove he’s smarter than Davis—and all analysts,” Alex said. “The man who killed several people simply to divert attention from himself. But what nailed it for me was a line from a Sherlock Holmes novel, The Sign of the Four: ‘When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’ I realized you could be only one person.”

She looked over at Kaely. “Reinhardt fit so much of what we knew, but I decided you were right. He would never break the oath he took when he joined the FBI. Reinhardt might be unfair and egotistical, but a serial killer?”

“I never actually accused him ... before now.”

“I know. But why is that? Wasn’t it because you had doubts?”

“Yes, I did. I still couldn’t accept it was him. I’ve been thinking about it ever since Ben and Julie took me, though, and—”

“Excuse me. I hate to interrupt you, but I can’t sit here all day and listen to you two prattle on and on about who was right and who was wrong.” He glared at Kaely. “Too bad you missed it this time, my dear. You could have been rescued.” He turned his attention back to Alex. “My goodness, I think you really do know who I am. I’m impressed. Too bad you won’t have time to tell anyone.”

“How do you know I didn’t?” Alex said.

He sighed loudly. “Because if you had, you wouldn’t be here now, would you? Again, don’t insult my intelligence.”

Kaely gasped and looked at Alex. “I should have caught it. We were so busy looking in another direction, I missed it. I’m sorry, Alex.”

“It’s not your fault. He knew how to play us. We forgot to ask the questions that should have been asked.” She looked back at him. “Once I realized who the perfect suspect was—regardless of the circumstances—there was only one possibility. Improbable, maybe, but true nonetheless.”

The man removed his glasses. “May I introduce myself, ladies?”

“It’s not necessary,” Alex said as he pulled the putty off his face, then dropped it onto the floor before stripping off his fake, bushy eyebrows and the head covering that made him appear bald.

“Say my name. I just want to hear you say it.”

“You’re Evan Bayne.”
