“I’m fine,” Kaely croaked. She put her hand to her throat.

“See? Now quit arguing,” Noah retorted. “You were hung from a rope. We need to make sure there isn’t damage to your throat. A clean, comfortable bed, someone bringing you food, time to rest and catch up on your sleep. How can you even think of turning that down?”

Kaely sighed. “Sounds wonderful.”

Alex had to admit it did sound good. “Bayne?” she asked.

Noah shook his head. “We have a BOLO out. Haven’t heard anything yet. He can’t get far, though. Especially since we have an updated description.”

“He’ll change again,” Kaely said softly. “Especially when he finds out his bomb didn’t go off.”

Alex nodded in agreement.

“Let’s not worry about it now,” Noah said. “Let’s just get to the hospital.”

“I hear this storm’s finally moving out,” the agent driving the truck said. “But we could get more snow before we’re all done. We’ve got ten inches on the ground. It’s gonna be hard to keep the roads clear.”

“Bayne can leave town before the next snow comes,” Kaely whispered. “He said Switzerland.”

“Well, that’s new information,” the agent sitting in the passenger seat said. “We need to watch the airports. Anyone heading out of the country. Especially with Switzerland as their end destination.”

“I think he’ll go somewhere else first,” Noah said. “If he knows you’re alive, he’ll realize he made a mistake by telling you about Switzerland, and he’ll have to change his plans. His wife has been detained in Australia and is being turned over to federal custody. I’m hoping we’ll get some information out of her.”

Alex suddenly remembered something. “Fake passport,” she whispered. “He said he has a fake passport.”

“Okay,” Noah said. “Did you hear that?” he asked the agent in the front seat.

“Yeah, we’ll pass it along,” one of them replied.

“I don’t suppose he told you the name he was using?” Noah asked.

Alex slowly shook her head. It hurt to move her neck. “I wonder if he’ll go back to Australia to get his wife.”

“I wouldn’t bet on it,” Kaely said, her voice barely audible.

“You think he’ll leave her behind?” the driver asked.

She nodded. “Psychopath. He doesn’t care.” What little voice Kaely had was now gone.

“That’s cold,” the driver said. “So anyone who cares about him is just tossed aside when he’s through with them?”

“That’s right,” Alex croaked. She looked out the window at the snowflakes drifting lazily around the car, then took a deep breath and whispered, “If you do a deal with the devil, you have to be prepared to pay the bill.”
