Logan didn’t sound good when he answered his phone. Not like himself.

“Helloooo...” he mumbled.

“Were you asleep?” she asked.

There was silence for a moment. Then he said, “Naaa ... Don know...”

“Logan, I’m on my way over.” She disconnected the call, quickly changed from her sweats and T-shirt, said good-bye to Krypto—who didn’t look happy—and hurried to her car. She’d just started the engine when her phone rang. It was Logan.

“I’m sorry,” he said when she answered. “I’m okay. I was reading and dozed off. You don’t need to come, but thanks.”

“Are you sure? I’d be happy to pick up some food.”

He laughed lightly. “Sounds great, but to be honest, I just took a pain pill and I’m going to lie down. Jeff and I spent some time together today, and it wore me out. Besides, I still have plenty of leftover Mexican food. Thanks anyway.”

“Okay, if you’re sure. I don’t mind staying while you sleep.”

There was a pause before he said, “That means a lot to me, Alex, but the place is a mess.”

That concerned her because his apartment was usually so neat. She wanted to offer to help him clean, but she was reluctant to keep pressing him. “All right, but if you need anything, all you have to do is pick up the phone.”

“Thank you. I know you mean that.”

“So do you think you’ll want to go to church tomorrow? Or would you rather rest?”

“I plan to go. Monty called, and he’s back. He’ll be hobbling, but he wants to join us.”

“That’s great. I look forward to it. Why don’t I pick you up this time? Then we can swing by and get Monty.”

“Sure. I’d appreciate that. The light still hurts my eyes sometimes and makes it hard to see clearly. I’d feel better if someone else drove.”

“I’ll see you about nine thirty, then.”

“Thanks, Alex. See you tomorrow.”

“See you.”

Alex was encouraged by Logan’s assurance that he was feeling all right. She’d done some research about brain tumors online but then decided to stop. Some articles gave her hope, others scared her. Outcomes depended a lot on what kind of tumor it was.

She went back inside the house. Krypto looked surprised but happy. She changed clothes again before sitting down on the couch, where her faithful dog cuddled up next to her and put his head on her lap. Then she turned on some praise music and once again prayed for Logan.
