“Listen,” she said. “This isn’t—”

A loud boom shook the earth around her. Alex fell to the ground, and dirt began to cover her. Then hands reached out and grabbed her, pulling her out of the darkness. Before she could open her eyes, she felt a sting on her neck, and immediately the world began to turn dark.

Jeff and Logan drove down to where SWAT and HRT were trying to find out if their agents were still alive. They both got out to help, but the SWAT commander waved them away.

“Get back,” he yelled. “We’ve got this.”

Logan ignored him and ran toward the Ghost Shack, which was being consumed by fire.

Jeff grabbed him and pulled him away. “Stop! Killing yourself won’t help her. If Alex was still in there, she’s gone.”

A wave of pain and nausea forced Logan to his knees, where he threw up. Jeff stood by him until the ambulances began to arrive. They’d been standing close by in case they were needed. As the wounded and burned were being loaded for transport to the hospital, Jeff waved EMTs over to where Logan still knelt on the ground.

“Give me the name of your doctor,” he said to Logan.

When he didn’t respond, Jeff said, “It’s in your records. No matter what you do, we’ll figure it out. Would you rather we find it while you’re still breathing or when it’s too late?”

Logan mumbled something that sounded like Dr. Schneider.

“He must mean Dr. Schmeidler,” one of the EMTs said. “She’s a surgeon at Mercy.”

“That’s the one. He was scheduled to have surgery with her this morning. Do you have a way to get her number?”

As one EMT helped Logan onto a stretcher, the other made a call, then handed his phone to Jeff. “Give the dispatcher a message for the doctor. She’ll get it to her.”

Thankful for the help, Jeff took the phone and gave the woman his name and number. “Tell Dr. Schmeidler that Logan Hart is on his way in. He put off his surgery this morning, but he needs help ASAP. Tell her I said to meet him in the ER when he gets there.”

After he disconnected the call, Jeff realized he’d just given both the dispatcher and the doctor orders, but hopefully they would understand the seriousness of the situation. He handed the phone back to the EMT. “I’ll follow you to the hospital. And thank you.”

The EMT nodded, then helped the other one load Logan into the ambulance before he jumped inside.

Jeff followed the flashing lights that split the night, sending out a warning that lives were hanging in the balance. He also did something he rarely did. He prayed. For Logan ... and for Alex. It would take a miracle for them to both live through all this. But he’d been told God still performed miracles.

With everything inside him, he hoped that was true.
