Although he wanted to plead for at least enough water to make his mouth feel like it wasn’t practically stuck shut, he didn’t want to be a problem patient. “Okay. And will someone remove the bandages when I get there?”

“Bandages?”

“I realize I probably have one on my head,” Logan said. “And I don’t mind that. But I would like the bandages over my eyes removed.”

After a few seconds, Donna said, “We’ll have to let the doctor make that decision, Agent Hart.”

He heard the catch in her voice. She was worried about him. “Thank you. And thank you for being such a great nurse. I appreciate it.”

She patted his shoulder. “You work at waking up enough for us to move you. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

He heard her soft footsteps fade and tried to get comfortable. He was tempted to just fall asleep again, but he wanted to talk to Jeff. Find out what was going on with Alex. Was she back yet? Was she okay?

He suddenly felt another hand on his shoulder. “Donna?”

But a male voice answered. “You need to know everything will be all right, Logan. Just have faith. God is with you.”

“Thank ... thank you. Who are you?”

Silence.

“Hello? Are you still there?”

No response.

Must be another nurse, a believer. He wished he could see, but what the man said had comforted him. “Thank you, God, for getting me through the surgery,” he whispered. “I believe everything will be all right no matter what happens next ... for me and for Alex.”

A deep peace settled on him as he waited for Donna’s return.
