“I twisted my ankle,” he said with a smile. “Should have warmed up. I haven’t done this in a long time. Guess I was overconfident.”

“What can I do to help?”

“I hate to ask, but could you assist me to my car?” He pointed to the copse of trees behind him. “If we cut through here, it’s parked right on the other side.”

Tracy hadn’t wanted to go through the secluded area, but it would save the man having to hobble through the rest of the path.

“I just moved here from Dallas,” he’d said. “My mother died a few months ago, and I didn’t want my dad to be alone. He’s kind of helpless.” He laughed. “Sorry, that’s a lot of personal information, but I thought it might help you decide I’m not some kind of weirdo who pretends to sprain his ankle to meet pretty women.”

Tracy laughed too. She liked this guy. “I feel perfectly safe. Let’s get you to your car.”

She reached down and helped him to his feet. He tried to put some weight on his injury and immediately yelped.

“Sorry. That wasn’t a very manly sound to make.”

She laughed again. He really was funny. “I promise not to make fun of your girly noises. Put your arm around my shoulders and lean on me.”

He frowned. “I’m a lot bigger than you. Are you sure you can do this?”

“I’m sure. I’m stronger than I look.”

“Okay. Thanks a lot. I really appreciate this.”

He’d wrapped his arm around her shoulders, and she’d put her arm behind his back.

She shivered now at the thought.

He’d halted just as they were almost to the other side of the trees.

“You okay?” she asked. Maybe she was making him move too fast.

“I’m fine.”

He reached into his pocket, and she caught a glimpse of the syringe only a second before he plunged it into her neck.

Then she’d come to in this place, wherever it was. She still had no idea.

Another memory had slowly surfaced not long after she arrived here. As she’d slumped to the ground, fighting the darkness threatening to overtake her, her abductor had softly sung an old song she hadn’t heard since she was a little girl.

“Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy, all for the love of you....”

Fresh tears dripped down the sides of her face onto her pillow. Would anyone ever find her?
