“Monty!” Logan was so happy he was here.

“I’m here too,” Jeff said. “Nathan’s in the waiting room. They only let in two at a time.”

“Thanks for coming,” Logan said.

“The doctor talked to me,” Monty said.

Logan was silent for a moment. He knew Monty and Jeff were concerned, and he didn’t want to ignore that, but he had other things on his mind.

“Look, guys. I know we need to discuss this, and we will. But right now I’m more interested in what’s going on with Alex. Have you found her yet?”

“No,” Jeff said. “They’ve combed the site, and nothing there points to her location. All we can do is wait to hear from her. She’s armed and she’s smart. She’ll get out of whatever situation she’s in, and she’ll help anyone else still alive come home too. I have ... faith.”

“Faith?” Logan said. “Careful, Jeff. You’ll end up one of us crazy Christians if you’re not careful.”

“Well, maybe that’s not such a bad thing. When you get out of here ... let’s talk.”

This was a real miracle. Logan had been praying for Jeff for a long time. He was a pragmatic guy, and to him, faith in God had always been akin to believing in unicorns.

“We’re praying for you, Logan,” Monty said. “I just know you’re going to beat this thing.”

Logan could hear the concern in his friend’s voice, and it touched him. “I believe that, too, but I really appreciate your prayers. I’m not looking forward to chemotherapy and radiation. I’d rather not go through all that.”

“Whatever it takes,” Jeff said. “The outcome’s the important thing.”

Logan understood what Jeff was saying, but he wanted to get back to work. Wanted to get back to where he was when he felt good. When he was strong. With Alex.

“Your doctor told us not to stay long,” Jeff said. “She said you need a lot of rest.”

“Please keep me updated on Alex, though. I’d rest a lot better if I knew she was okay.”

“I will,” Jeff said.

“Hey, when they’re ready to let you out of here, call me,” Monty said. “Nathan and I will come pick you up. And I’m taking off a few days so I can make sure you get the rest you need.” He chuckled. “And don’t worry. I won’t make a nuisance of myself. Just want to make sure you have some help until you’re able to get along without me.”

“Hey, thanks,” Logan said around the lump that had formed in his throat. “I really appreciate it.”

“Wow, I thought you’d fight me. I’m surprised.”

“Not this time, my friend. I know I need some assistance.”

He blinked several times, trying to hold back tears. One of the shapes came closer to the bed and reached out his hand. Logan grabbed it.

“Hey, I thought you couldn’t see,” Monty said.

“It’s getting better and better. I’m certain my sight will come back. ’Course, then I’ll have to look at you again. That’s a little discouraging.”

“Very funny. You just have no taste.”

“Yeah, that’s it.”

“We’d better go,” Jeff said. He walked up next to Monty. “You get back to us as soon as you can, okay? Everyone misses you.”

“Thanks, Jeff. I appreciate it. How are Bethany and Todd doing with the profile?”

“They’ve been refining it with the newest information. I’m sure they’ve finished it and it’s been given to the investigators at the command post by now.”

“I’d like to read it, if possible. Or at least hear it?”
