You’re certain she said this Alex person had been to the park in Ashville?” Rider asked again.

“Yes, I’ve told you the same thing at least four times.”

“You should have awakened me when you got in.”

“You get mad when I do that.”

Rider was irritated that he’d had to wait this long to discover they’d finally found the right woman, but he was also secretly overjoyed. She was finally going to pay for what she’d done.

“You’ll take her out tonight,” Rider said. “But once you’re in the park, I’ll deal with her.”

“And then what?” Brent asked. “Then you’ll let them all go?”

“I told you I would. Are you calling me a liar?”

“No, it’s just ... well, it’s just something Tracy said.”

“And what did she say?” Rider’s voice rose with anger, but he didn’t care. Brent was nothing to him. A means to an end.

“Never mind. I don’t want you to hurt her. She’s nice.”

“Nice? None of them are nice. You didn’t touch her, did you?”

“Of course not. You know I would never do that. They belong to you. You’ve made that clear.”

Rider’s resentment grew. Was Brent trying to hide something from him? “I want to know what she said to make you doubt me.” He saw fear in the man’s eyes. Good.

“She said that if you’d let the other women go, someone would have come looking for us. That not everyone would have kept quiet.”

Was that all he was worried about? “That might be true, but no one knows where we are. And none of them have a clue how to find us.”

Rider stared at Brent for a moment, looking for any signs of deception, but he didn’t spot any. He wasn’t really concerned. Brent was so dumb he couldn’t pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. Especially his.

He sat back in his chair. “So tonight we’ll finally have her. The one we’ve been looking for all this time.”

“What will you do?”

Rider glared at him. “Never ask that question again. Do you understand?”

Brent nodded. “Just don’t forget about me when you finally have what you want.”

“How could I do that? We’re bound together. I could never get along without you.”

“Or me without you.”

Logan had been trying to sleep, but he couldn’t get Alex off his mind. Why did he have to be stuck in a hospital where he couldn’t do anything to help her?

The pain in his head had grown steadily worse, but he hadn’t pushed the button for more morphine because he wanted to be able to think clearly. He finally had to give in, though. He lay back on his pillow and let the drug bring him some respite.

But as it kicked in, he found himself praying for Alex with a sudden sense of urgency. As if she were in real trouble.

Tracy awoke to the sound of someone calling her name. At first, she thought it was her mother. She was so happy to hear her voice. But when she opened her eyes, she realized she was still in the same cell she’d lived in for days. She’d had to drink her tea later than usual last night, so she was still groggy. She hadn’t wanted it, but this wasn’t the time to make Andy and his pal angry.

She pushed herself off the bed, stumbled to the door, and then slid open the upper panel. “I’m here,” she called, trying to push the sleep away. “Sorry.”

“It’s me,” Alex said after a few seconds. “How did it go?”
