“IT TOOK TWENTY YEARS.”

Cal looks up from his roast beef sandwich and eyes me curiously. “What’s that?”

“For me to finally get a tour of the infamous Reirdon Falls.”

“Shit, yeah, it has been that long.” He takes a bite of his sandwich, then asks, “What do you think?”

“It’s bigger and a lot more developed than the intel I had on it.”

“Yeah, most of that is Ax’s doing, expanding the town, growing the Thorns empire and all that.” He stills. “Hold up… intel?”

I snatch up a fry from my plate and take a bite. “Yeah, you know, you were considered a potential threat back then, I had to do my research.”

“Couldn’t stay as a threat, though, yeah?”

“Too much sexual tension?” I joke.

He nods. “Couldn’t think about fighting me for wanting to fuck me.”

I roll my eyes. “Always thinking with your dick.”

“And you always thinking about my dick.”

I shake my head to myself. “Arrogant shit.”

“Hell, yeah,” he says, laughing for a bit, before turning his attention back to his sandwich.

I smile to myself when I see the pickles he’s pushed off to the side of his plate. He catches me looking and asks, “You wanna take them? Hate those slimy-ass things.”

“I remember,” I say, snatching them up and peeling up my burger bun and adding them in.

He grimaces. “Ain’t you already got three of them in there?”

“This makes five.”

“Jesus Christ.”

“I know what I like, sweets.”

“Yeah, you’ll real consistent about that.”

Our eyes lock at his words.

He reaches across our table and brushes his thumb over my cheek. “I’m thankful for that, Charlotte.”

“I know, Cal,” I breathe, leaning into him, just that slight touch burning right through me.

“How are you guys doing?” a bright, singsong voice cries, breaking through the moment between us, making Cal pull back.

I look out to see the woman who greeted us as we’d walked in. Sarah Wilkes, the owner of Sarah’s Place, the diner located in the heart of Reirdon Falls.

“We’re doing good,” Cal tells her. His gaze falls on my half-empty coffee cup. “You want a refill?”

I nod and look up at Sarah. “Yeah, that would be nice.”

She makes a note on her notepad, then lingers for a bit, before taking off behind the counter to get the coffee going.
