JESUS CHRIST.

Talk about my dick being in the driving seat.

Nah, it’s way more than that. Always was when it came to Charlotte.

The moment I met her, there was a real strong pull to her. The more I got to know her, it became all too clear that there was some kind of soul-deep connection between us. And, hell, I never believed in that before. But it ain’t something I could ever deny with her. It was always right in my face, the need for her burning through my veins.

You wanna talk addictions? She’s mine. The kind where you know it’s gonna ruin you, but you just can’t stop going down that road, can’t shake it, for the life of you.

It’s a good thing I’m not gonna be left alone with her much longer. Sometimes you gotta call for help when you need it. Ain’t usually my scene, but she was always the exception to a load of things.

“So, that happened,” she says, strutting out of my bathroom, wrapped in one of my towels and dabbing at her long, wet hair with another. “Four times,” she adds with a sexy wink.

“Yeah.” All night long.

“You know,” she says, sauntering up to me. “Things don’t usually live up to the picture you’ve been holding onto for so long.” She traces her fingers down my bare chest. “But last night surpassed all of my expectations, Cal.”

She ain’t wrong about that. I mean, the fact that I was able to pull off a four-timer last night at my age says it all.

The woman’s got a hold on me.

“Right there with you, kitten.”

She smiles up at me, her eyes sparkling at the use of that pet name. “I haven’t heard that in so long. I didn’t realize just how much I'd missed it rumbling from you.”

I clasp her hands on my chest. “I missed saying it.”

“Have you thought about me over the years?”

“You got no idea just how much.”

“Me too,” she admits. Her face falls. “I’m just sorry for the circumstances surrounding our extremely long coming reunion.”

“Yeah, it ain’t ideal.” I pull away and snatch my jeans up off the floor. Pulling them on, I tell her, “Messy was pretty much our thing, though, yeah?”

She smiles bittersweetly. “Sad, but true.”

“Is that why you never sought me out after I came out of hiding?”

She hesitates.

“Well?” I press. “Don’t try to tell me you didn’t know I resurfaced. I know you. You’ve always got your ear to the ground.”

“I did know, yes. But I wasn’t sure there’d be anything to come back for. It had been nineteen years, Cal.”

“You didn’t even try.”

Her eyes flash at being called out and she retorts, “Right back at you.”

Damn woman has an answer for everything.

“I’ve spent the last three years or so trying to rebuild my life. It ain’t been easy neither with everything hanging over Thorns. When I came out of hiding nothing was the same as when I left it. Took a lot to get back some kind of life. You already had your life well established.”

“A life that I’ve worked extremely hard to build.”
