“Not if I keep my distance proper, do it right.”

Ax cocks an eyebrow. “Thought you’d be more on the fence about this.”

“Kingmaker? The guy’s a legend, Ax. Incredibly hard to track. You know what that’s like to somebody like me? The challenge of a lifetime. Can’t be passing it up now it’s come my way.”

“Kingmaker’s a woman,” Ax informs him.

“How’d you know that?”

Ax smirks and gestures my way. “You wanna take this?”

“She and I got a history,” I tell Runner.

Realization flashes in his eyes. “Hold up. Is she the one you knew all those years back? The one you were fucking around with on Rox’s mom, with some overlap between Kim too? The one you let walk? The big secret none of us could figure out?”

Jesus Christ.

Ax is shaking his head in dismay.

Ain’t surprised. It’s his mom we’re talking about getting screwed over by me.

“It weren’t exactly like that,” I tell Runner.

“It weren’t, huh?”

“No,” I growl. “It weren’t dirty like that. There was just a lot going on at the time.”

“I’d say. Three women and—”

“All right!” Ax snaps. “Enough. Jesus Christ, let’s keep on point here, all right? All that’s in the past.”

“This Kingmaker clearly ain’t,” Runner points out.

I start toward him. “You little shit.”

Ax throws out his arm, holding me back. “You want his help, you need to lock it up. And, Runner, take it down. Your commentary ain’t helping nothing.”

“Fine,” Runner says, holding up his hands.

“Dealer?” Ax questions, still using a load of his strength to hold me back, because I ain’t backed off yet.

But there ain’t much choice right now.

With a final growl, I step back, and Ax drops his arm. “All right.”

“This is time-sensitive, Runner. She’s in trouble and her trouble’s got a hold on Dealer. You see the domino effect?”

“Yeah, it could come back on the club too.” He straightens up, then pulls his phone out of the back pocket of his jeans, swiping it open and typing into it. “I’m gonna need everything you got on her. Real name. Key figures in her life. Any known haunts. All that. Then I’ll take it from there.”

I reach into the inner pocket of my leather jacket and toss him a SD Card. “It’s all on this. Fire it up.”

Ax grins. “Been keeping tabs on her, huh?”

“First year I resurfaced. Stopped after that.”

It was too goddamn hard.

“On it,” Runner says, heading out of the room and down the hall.
