He curses and stumbles back, hissing as shards of glass bite into his skin. He loses his footing and crashes into a nearby table, the thing collapsing under his weight.

One temporarily down.

But it isn’t enough.

I swipe my blade at another incoming soldier, but he snags my wrist with far too much ease. Pushing against him does nothing, my body is plagued with weakness. He tugs it free from my grip and I stumble.

My surroundings start to blur, everything running together, until it’s hardly discernable.

I can’t… I can’t hold my weight up.

“Shit,” I gasp, sinking to my knees.

Everything is slipping away all too quickly.

The leader crouches in front of me. “You’ve fulfilled the first part of your contract to Priest. Now comes the second.”

“What?” I ask, dazedly. “But I didn’t… I didn’t… kill… him.”

“We know. Priest knew you wouldn’t.”

“Then… what… now?”

He wraps his arms around me and hauls me up. “Now you become bait.”

It’s the last thing I hear before darkness descends.
