I know how much Roxana hates this kind of thing. I also know it’s antagonizing it by having Ax here, around it all. They got trust between them, but she’s never gonna trust the club whores with him. He’s got a rep that ain’t gonna leave him. Almost as bad as Runner, the guy who used to screw his way through any bitch in his path. It don’t help that Ax is club Prez now, so he’s the one they’re all aspiring to get at. Club whores are all about getting an in with the club, and Ax would be the ultimate way to see to that. He’d never touch any of them again, though. I don’t got no worries when it comes to him with my daughter. He’s proven how committed he is to her. She knows it too, but when it’s up close and personal, it just sets her off.

My interruption works, and Roxana’s eyes light up, as she tells me, “Neil brought it into the kitchen. It’s a huge slab cake.”

“Well, let’s go have a piece, yeah?” I wrap my arm around her and give Ax a chin lift. He looks relieved that I managed to cool Roxana down. “I’m gonna head out after.”

“No, Dad. You can’t spend your birthday alone. Is it because of what I said about this… party?”

“‘Course not. I’m just tired, princess. It’s late and I ain’t a twenty-year-old no more.”

“Okay,” she murmurs.

She’s real worried about me. Too worried. It’s why I gotta lie.

Nah, I ain’t really tired. Might have a few years on most of the boys, but I can match their stamina any day.

I just ain’t feeling this. I appreciate them throwing me a party. I ain’t club no more, but I know they’ve got a lot of respect for me and they wanted to show their appreciation for the help I’ve given the club since Ax became Prez. So, I humored it. But now I just wanna head home and shut out everyone and everything.

Roxana hugs me to her, smiling up at me, as she says, “Happy Birthday, Dad.”

“Thanks, princess.”

“I just want you to be happy. You know that, right?”

“You don’t gotta worry, Roxana. I’m good.”

Lies.

All fucking lies.
