“Stay until late. I’m going to be busy with this. Stegan will take you home. He’ll wait in the café until it’s time to bring you back.”

“You don’t have to do that,” I insisted.

He gave me a hard look. “You’re not taking the fucking subway, that’s for sure. Don’t argue with me, Nina. I’ve got enough on my plate as it is.”

“Sorry,” I muttered, my eyes batting away. Even though his tone was hard, the worry behind it was undeniable, and I didn’t want to add to his burden.

His finger tucked under my chin and raised it. “That’s my good girl, firefly.”

“Firefly?” I coughed out.

He grinned. “Yeah, well, in the dark of the night, you’re my light.”

“That…is so sweet. Cheesy, but sweet,” I couldn’t help but say. Grabbing his forearm, I shook my head. “I meant to tell you this earlier. Not sure if this will help you find Tasa, but I figured it couldn’t hurt.”

His green eyes turned crystalline sharp. “What is it? I have no leads, so anything would help.”

“I don’t know if you know this…if anyone knows, but Tasa’s minor is modern dance.” I was almost certain she’d switched it to her major, although I had no proof of it so wasn’t going to go there. “A few weeks ago, she received something in the mail. From a highly sought-after experimental dance workshop that’s very popular among the dance students. Everyone knows about Madame Pierrette’s dance troupe and her spring workshop in Canada. It’s a big deal, so I was surprised when I saw mail addressed from her. Long story short, Tasa was accepted, which shows what raw talent she has. It’s in Montreal in May. That’s a few months away, but I can’t imagine Tasa missing this opportunity,” I finished breathlessly.

My grip on his forearm had tightened at the thought that I might be betraying my closest friend. But if Alex was afraid for her, then that was enough for me. If he didn’t want me to take the subway, only a day after hooking up, what kind of danger might Tasa be in? His one and only little sister.

Pressing a kiss to my forehead, he murmured, “You haven’t betrayed her by telling me. You’re helping me find her before someone else does. Someone who could hurt her, kill her even. Especially now that Nelu is in the know. Who the hell knows what he’ll do if I don’t talk him off the ledge.”

Wrapping me in his arms, he gave me a tight hug. “Come on, let’s get you dressed and on your way home,” he advised as he walked me back into his bedroom. I nodded and quickly put on the icky dress from last night. I could only imagine what would happen at his meeting. He didn’t want to marry anyone related to the Popescus, but would he have a choice in the matter?

I let out an anxious breath.

I had no answer, and I didn’t think he was any closer to one, either.
