NICU

Iwas back, thank fuck.

Couldn’t get out of Los Angeles fast enough once the contract with the Hagi clan was set in stone. I headed out for Jewel as soon as I dumped my stuff at my apartment. With the tracking device, I knew she was back on campus after having gone upstate to visit her father.

The weather was beautiful. The sky was a brilliant blue above my head. I drew in a long breath of crisp, cool air, the kind that held the scent of autumn in the city. My heart pounded against my breastbone. Luca had given me a heads-up that Jewel was still pissed off at me. That, I had not expected. Since I had no idea how she would receive me, I did the next best thing to get her acclimated to my return. I staked out a spot across the street from her dorm room. If she happened to look outside, she’d spot me.

God, I fucking missed her. Being so close to her, yet unable to touch her, to bring her in for a hug, to pound my cock into her… It was wreaking havoc on my nerves.

Luca suggested I back off until I met her at the wedding. Perhaps that was the best route to take. To be patient and hang off seeing her until we met in a public setting where she wouldn’t have the opportunity to rage at me. It had worked once before, at Luca’s engagement party, but who was I kidding? I’d never last that long. It’d be a miracle if I lasted the night.

Dusk fell around me as I stood in my spot. The streets teemed with students, laughing and joking around, getting ready for a Saturday night, and Halloween to boot. The light in Jewel’s room turned on. She’d been somewhere in the dorm, maybe hanging out in another girl’s room, maybe fixing herself something to eat. The gossamer curtain swished open, and her head popped out, turning as she scanned the street quickly. Her gaze halted, eyes burning into me.

I stood still, holding my breath for her next move.

She disappeared, and the lights went out a second later.

Yup, she’d spotted me.

Her response: she was playing dead.

I smirked. Did she really think I’d let her get away with that?

I jaywalked across the street, halting vehicles with my palm straight out. Slipping in between honking cars, I made it over to the other side unscathed. A few minutes later, I waved to the guard on my payroll, bypassed the slow elevator, and took the stairs two at a time up to her floor. Passing a few of her floormates fluttering in and out of various rooms, I skidded to a stop in front of her door and rapped on it loudly.

Nothing.

I smirked and warned, “Open up, Jewel. I know you’re in there.”

“Go away,” she shouted.

I chuckled. No one did it for me like she did.

“I’m not fucking leaving. Either you let me in, or I make a scene,” I threatened.

There was a crash and then stomping toward the door. It swung open. She stood there like an avenging angel, holding a lamp in her raised hand.

“You,” she spat out. “What the hell are you doing here?” With a curl of her lip, she jeered, “I didn’t think I’d see you again, or at least not until you were forced to be in my presence at Cat’s wedding. You coward.”

I huffed out a laugh. I hadn’t expected a homecoming, but did she just call me a coward?

Ridiculous.

Gripping her wrist in case she tried to bean me with the lamp, I pushed my way inside. Throwing the door closed, I twisted the lock behind me and took her in.

She was a sight for sore eyes. Waves of long crimped hair flowed down as if she’d kept them in braids for too long and had only undone them moments ago. God, she was stunning. Her amber eyes flashed fire, and her cheeks were rosy with fury. Her chest rose and fell, pressing her lush tits against the tight shirt she was wearing.

My gaze flickered over the room. I already knew Sofia left to visit her family on Friday and Saturday nights, but I was pleased to see Jewel didn’t have any costumes or sexy clothes laying around. If my guess was correct, she had no intention of going out tonight. There was my good girl.

Taking the lamp out of her hand, I placed it on her desk. Getting into her space, I stepped her back until her knees hit her bed, right where I wanted her. The luscious sweet rose fragrance that spoke of home and a hard fuck drifted toward me.

Her palm smacked my chest, halting my momentum. Her scent might be sweet, but she wasn’t. Not yet, anyway.

“Listen up, asshole. You left me. Right after an argument, you left, and now you think you can just waltz back into my life like nothing happened? Like you didn’t walk out on me?”

My head canted to the side, and my forehead crinkled. Her full bottom lip tremble slightly. Fuck. She was upset. Holding it together, but definitely upset.

I pulled off my cashmere coat and jacket, laid them over the back of her chair, and explained, “Alex forced me to go to L.A. as punishment. It was fucking hell, baby doll…being away from you every day. But I figured you were so pissed off at me that I should step back and give you space.” I unhooked one cuff link and dropped it on her night table with a clinking sound. “I’d hounded you for weeks, and you did so good, but I thought I’d do right by you for once. Especially after my fuckup.” The other freed cuff link joined its mate.
