NICU

Standing in the empty hallway of Jewel’s dorm, my back slumped against her door, I flicked my wrist to check the time. It was past three in the morning. After coming four times, she saw the writing on the wall: I planned to fuck her till the break of dawn.

So she kicked me out. It was okay because fucking her had brought my blood back down to a simmer. For now. My brain chemistry had changed, like taking a hit of fentanyl for the first time. I was no psychic, but even I could tell chances were, I’d need her again.

I shook my head. What is it about this girl?

Sure, she’d caught my eye the moment she waltzed into my club. Alongside my fiancée, no less. But then my fiancée left with my brother, and I was only happy to see the back of them. Cat and Luca were meant to be together. They left to sort out their shit, and I was given the chance to chill with Jewel. Later, I took her back to her dorm room, making her come with my mouth and on my cock before taking my own pleasure.

I heard her shift behind the door. I had no desire to move from my spot guarding her, but the communal bathrooms were down the hall, and there was a chance she’d step out to use them before going to bed. I didn’t want her to find me there.

Throwing one last glance over my shoulder, I forced myself off her door with an irritated huff.

We had a hell of a time hooking up, so I should be good, no?

It was the first time I’d been told to leave moments after pulling out of a woman. That should have pissed me off. Instead, my anger had burned away, quickly followed by amusement. The woman had a little brat inside, waiting to bust out, and I’d be there to put her back in line when it did.

But not quite yet. It was too soon to show her the full spectrum of my dominance.

I wanted more from her. So much so, that she’d be scared off if she knew the extent of my intentions.

Moving to the stairwell, I took the flight of stairs down to the lobby.

Jewel might be young, but the pain in her eyes spoke of something else. She’d been through things. While she lived almost as shielded a life as the flocks of mafie girls her age, she wasn’t gazy-eyed. I sensed that if I revealed to her the crazy shit I’ve done in my short life, she wouldn’t blink an eye. Instead, her amber irises would deepen in color, a beguiling mixture of brown and green, like they did when she was processing something.

What I liked about her was that she wasn’t breakable. Smart as a whip. Incisive. Sassy. Oh, and sexy as fuck. For an overprotected young woman, whether American or Romanian, she was a rare gem, indeed. She was the full package, and if she thought I was going to step away after one night, she had another think coming.

Although my oldest brother had married an outsider, chances were that wasn’t in the cards for us. I might be the youngest in line, but I was still a Lupu prince. I had to marry for the family, and my future wife had to be both Romanian mafie and a virgin. Jewel was none of those things, and for the first time, I was tempted to defy their expectations.

Which was a scary thought.

Luca was the black sheep, the contrarian who went against everything demanded of him. If I didn’t love the bastard, I would’ve strangled him to death long ago. I might be a savage, I might struggle with my impulses, but I didn’t disregard familial obligations. That was his role, and he took it to the extreme, pushing our eldest brother and head, or ?ef, of our family, Alex, into apoplectic fits.

Slipping out into the lobby, I carefully eyed the night guard at the counter. A man in his mid-thirties, he shook the Daily News newspaper in his hands.

“Anything interesting?” I asked casually, lifting my chin to his paper.

Spotting his New York Yankees cap, I struck a conversation about their stats this season. Not that I gave a shit about baseball, but you couldn’t be male without knowing the state of sports in this city. By the end of the conversation, I let it be known that my girl lived on the first floor and that I wanted him to keep a special eye on her. I exchanged numbers with him, slipped him five immaculate hundred-dollar bills with a promise that if any of his buddies wanted to help me out, they would get the same treatment.

His eyebrows lifted to his forehead, but good man that he was, he slipped the Benjamins into his wallet and said, “Sure thing, bro.”

That was the good thing about New York City. People were quick on the uptake. Between the thread count of my suit and the crispness of those bills, he knew I was not someone to fuck with. I made sure to have eyes and ears on Jewel before I even stepped out of her building.

I made my way down the quiet stone-paved path to the crenellated black iron gate of her college, crossed the street, and stopped at the corner, across from her building. Feet frozen, I looked up with a sneaking suspicion that I would become well acquainted with this corner. Her figure passed back and forth across the sheer white curtains of her windows. My jaw tightened when I saw the motions of her undressing behind the gossamer material that left almost nothing to the imagination. The chick was fucking insane. Six years in some boarding school up in rural Massachusetts and she’d forgotten what it was like to live in the city. There were Peeping Toms everywhere, and I wasn’t even counting myself.

It was a given I’d be watching her.

My cell phone vibrated.

I pulled it out and swiped the video chat open with a grin. “Hey, little sis. Is your boy keeping you up at night?”

“Eight minutes. You have eight extra minutes of life on me, and you still lord it over me by calling me ‘little’ sis,” my twin, Tasa, grumbled.

“Hey, you had your chance to come out first, and your complaints would’ve been moot, but you snooze, you lose,” I teased.

“Oh? And how was I going to manage that, sharing such a tight space with your bossy ass?” she quipped, one eyebrow raised high.

“Tasa, it’s almost four in the morning. Is everything okay?”
