“Then what?”

“Then they said, give us another hundred bucks. Let me tell you, officer, I would’ve paid five times that to be with this chick… anyways, I pay and then they handed me a key to the motel room she was in... Room 6… they warn me not to hurt her or they’d hurt me and that I had exactly one hour to finish up or it’d be another hundred bucks.”

“So you went to the room… then what?”

“Well, I go to the room, open the door with the key and the redhead is already laying on the bed. She sits up and tells me to come over. She definitely had an accent, I think Russian… and I’m pretty sure that she was high as a kite because she seemed out of it. She just kinda laid there and let me do my thing. Didn’t take long, but hey, it’s been awhile…”

“Did you stay the whole hour?”

“Hell no. I took that key back and got the hell out of there. I’m not gonna lie, I felt a little ashamed, being married and all...”

Yeah, you’re a real saint, Ernie…

“You know why they took your driver’s license, right, Ernie?” Jason said, shaking his head.

“I’m guessing to make sure that I’m not a cop? I don’t know?”

“I knew you weren’t building rockets, Ernie, but you’re a goddamn idiot. They took your license so they can extort you for more money.”

“Extort? You mean like shake me down?”

“Nothing gets by you, does it? Yes, shake you down. They’re going to show up at your house one day, probably in the near future, and threaten to tell your wife if you don’t pay up.”

“What if I just tell her that they’re lying?”

“Ernie, remember the cameras in the rooms? The ones you used to pick your redhead? They got you on film you dumbass. Did you really think that they’d turn those off for your privacy?”

“Oh my god… I’m so screwed… what am I gonna do?” Ernie asked Jason. All the color had gone from his face and he was sweating profusely.

“You’re going to help me catch these bastards…”
