“Not you, Knox. Just me and Babe Ruth. We need to chat. Don’t worry, I won’t steal your man,” Lucy instructed.

“Lucy, no, you promised you wouldn’t do this!”

“Uh, do what, exactly?” Coop interjected.

“Relax, you two, I’ll be nice,”Lucy said, softening her voice.

Coop gave Cara a look of surprise as Lucy grabbed him by the hand and started to pull him outside.

“We’ll only be a few minutes. Go freshen up for your man or something,” Lucy declared.

Cara mouthed the words I’m sorry to Coop as Lucy closed the doors, leaving the two of them alone on his balcony.

“Wow, this is great. Have a seat, we need to talk,” Lucy said to a bewildered but intrigued Cooper Madison.

“Yes, ma’am…” Coop replied, feigning surrender.

“Look me in the eyes, dude. You need to look me in the eyes, right now, and promise me that you’re not just going to use my best friend and then break her heart,” Lucy demanded.

“Can I ask you a question, first? If I was a janitor or a school teacher would you be asking me this question?”

“Fair enough… I’m sure that you get this type of suspicion a lot... ” Lucy responded.

“Listen, I am not a naive man... and I will never be crazy enough to think that anyone should ever feel sorry for my success, but you know who hasn’t made me feel like she doesn’t trust my intentions? Cara.”

“Yes...” Lucy replied.

“Yes?” Coop asked, puzzled.

“Yes. Yes, I would ask you if you were a janitor or a teacher or flipping burgers. She is my best friend, so I would ask anyone.”

“Oh...”

“So, back to the question at hand?”

“I’ll tell you the same thing I’d tell anyone, including Cara. I don’t know what this is, or where it’s going. What I do know is that I can’t imagine doing anything other than finding out just that. I really like Cara. A lot. But, we are still just getting to know each other, which is hard enough in any relationship, let alone a heavily scrutinized one,” Coop replied.

“Oh…”

“You know what, though?” Coop asked.

“No, what?” Lucy replied.

“It’s reassuring to see so many people who truly care about her. She must be as amazing as I already think she is.”

Lucy softened.

“You have no idea… she is the best person I know. She’s the total package, dude. But, she’s not perfect, so don’t put that pedestal too high. It’s not fair to either of you.”

“Fair enough…” Coop replied.

“You know, I’m a little surprised…”

“About?”

“How quickly Cara has let things progress with you. If anyone who knows the two of us would’ve predicted that which one of us would be the one involved in a whirlwind romance, it definitely would not have been Cara.”

“Why’s that?”
