“The Cubs want to make one last run at you before making a move.”

“That’s your interesting news?”

“No, the interesting news is what they are planning to do if you choose not to play.”

“If, and it’s a big if, I ever play again it won’t be in Chicago. I just can’t. It would be too hard.”

“That’s where this whole thing becomes interesting. You see, the Cubs know that you probably will never pitch in their uniform again, but they want to get something for you while they still can since they hold the rights to your contract.”

“They want to trade me? But the deadline has passed.”

“Yes, the normal trade deadline has passed, but you can still make a trade if the players involved clear waivers.”

“Who would want to trade for me? They’d have to take on my contract and not to mention the risk that I will never play for them.”

“The Cubs said that they have an American League team who is very interested, and they are willing to give up two top prospects in exchange for the rights to your contract, assuming you clear waivers…”

“Which team?”

“They won’t say, yet, but I’m guessing it’s New York, Cleveland, or Detroit. The Yankees have the money to take the risk, and Cleveland and Detroit have the prospects and are geographically the favorites.”

“Do you think I would actually clear waivers?”

“I do, because if any other team outside of the one that they want to trade with claims you, the Cubs can simply rescind the request and keep you on their roster. Happens all the time. If the team that they want to do business with claims you, then they have two days to work out a deal.”

“Well, you learn something new every day, I suppose.”

“I gotta make some calls now, I’ll be in touch. Say hi to Cara for me. Seems like a sweet girl!”

Coop hung up and stared blankly at the wall across the room. He had never considered pitching again this season, but he also didn’t realize that he could be traded after the July 31st deadline.

Maybe Cleveland…
