“I only mean you work too hard and deserve to have time for yourself.”

I shove his hands away. “There is nothing wrong with working hard.”

He lifts his hands in surrender. “I didn’t say there was.”

I fist my hands on my hips. “Sure sounded like it.”

“I’m trying to ensure you get enough rest.”

“You’re not my mother.”

He prowls toward me, and I back up until I’m plastered to the door with him caving me in. “Damn straight, I’m not your mother. Would your mother do this?”

His lips slam down on mine and pleasure blasts through me as his taste coats my tongue. I suck on his tongue, and he moans down my throat. The vibration makes me lose control. I grab hold of his shoulders and pull him close until my breasts are squished between us.

Cole squeezes my ass and lifts until I wrap my legs around him. And then we’re moving. Except unlike in a movie, we slam into a car and the alarm blares to notify the entire town what we’re up to.

I wrench my lips from his and gulp air into my lungs. “We can’t do this.”

He punches his hips, and I feel his hard length press against my core. “We can. And, as I recall, we’re pretty spectacular at it.”

I bite my lip as I contemplate throwing caution into the wind. Who am I kidding? I wouldn’t be throwing caution to the wind, I’d be burning the sucker down.

I scan the parking lot as I try to get my mind to go back online and be helpful instead of letting my hormones override my thinking. My gaze lands on Cole’s jeep and I notice the Illinois license plate. That’ll do it. My mind is firmly back online.

I push on his shoulders. “Let me down.”

He doesn’t hesitate to set me on my feet. He makes sure I’m steady before retreating a step. “What happened? Where did you go?”

“I didn’t go anywhere. I’m right here.” Except I’m staring at the ground and refusing to look him in the eye like I’m a big, fat chicken.

He places a finger under my chin and lifts until we’re eye to eye. “Ellie girl, I’m not an idiot. Please don’t lie to me.”

I stare at him for a long time as I consider how to respond. I can brush him off again, but is that fair? He’s been forthcoming about his wish to move our relationship from co-parents to lovers. I should be honest with him.

I clear my throat. “We need to talk.”

To Cole’s credit, he doesn’t flinch at my declaration despite everyone in the world knowing ‘we need to talk’ is code for ‘you are not going to be happy with what I have to say’.

“Let’s go to my apartment.”

He places his hand on my lower back and guides me toward the carriage house. As we walk, I reconsider. It’s bad enough my sisters know what a fool I was about Bob. I don’t need this man knowing, too.

We reach my apartment and settle in on opposite ends of the sofa. I wring my hands as I try to figure out where to begin or come up with a lie he’ll buy.

“Shall I make us some tea?”

I groan. “No. You can’t be sweet now.”

He smirks. “What can I say? I’m a sweet guy.”

I roll my eyes. “Goofball.”

Silence falls and it’s the awkward type that makes you want to blurt out the first thing to pop into your mind, which is what I do.

“I don’t trust out-of-towners.”

He chuckles. “I hate to tell you this, Ellie, but this is not a surprise.”
