She waggles her eyebrows. “It’s not a chore.”

Considering Rowan is a six-foot-five former professional football player, I’m positive it isn’t. Although Cole wasn’t a professional athlete and yet his ability to use his body to bring mine pleasure is unparalleled. I fan my face as I imagine him above me, thrusting into me.

Ashlyn studies my face. “What are you thinking about?”

“I’m thinking pregnancy hormones are no joke.”

She sighs. “I wouldn’t know.”

I bump her shoulder. “You can’t expect to get pregnant on the first try.”

“You did.”

I rub my hands over my belly. “Yeah, but I’m an overachiever.”

She giggles. “True.”

“It’ll work out and, if it doesn’t, you’ll make it work out.” Because my sister doesn’t let anything stand in her way when she has a goal. She was in love with Rowan for years before he noticed she was more than an annoying little sister of a friend. Yet she never gave up on him.

Not like Cole gave up on me. I told him I would never move and why and boom! he’s done with me. I stare down at my growing belly. I hope he’s not done with our child, although he did promise he would never abandon his child. Considering his reasons, I believe him.

Still. I should have stuck to my plan. Work hard at making the inn one of the premier bed and breakfasts in the state and country. Men and relationships do nothing but complicate things and get in the way of you achieving your goals.

Ashlyn squeezes my hand. “What about you? Will things work out with you?”

I smile her way, but it’s forced. “When did my baby sister get this smart?”

“I’ve always been this smart. But my intelligence might have been hidden under my troublemaker exterior.”

I snort. “You think?”

“I can’t help it. Trouble finds me even when I’m not looking for it.”

“In other words, you sometimes go searching for it.”

She winks. “What’s life without a little trouble?”

“I wouldn’t know. I’m not a troublemaker.”

“Really? You didn’t skip school?”

I roll my eyes. I skipped school a total of two times in my life. “You’re seriously comparing skipping school to terrorizing the librarian?”

She shrugs. “How could I know Gratitude believes in ghosts?”

Aspen clears her throat. “If we could begin tonight’s discussion of …” She checks the cover of the book she’s holding. “Midnight Train to Happy.”

I can’t help the laugh from escaping. Who comes up with these books?

“There’s nothing wrong with a guilty pleasure read,” Feather shouts.

“I agree, but it would be nice if we could read something a bit more intellectual,” Aspen suggests.

“I have a list I can recommend,” Lilac says before unlocking her phone. “Sapiens, a brief history of mankind, A Brief History of Time—”

“Thank you, Lilac. We’ll add those books to our potential future reads.”

“I’ll email you the list,” Lilac responds. Aspen laughs, and she frowns. “You were being sarcastic, weren’t you?”

As I laugh at poor Lilac’s inability to understand sarcasm, I realize Ashlyn was right. It is good to be surrounded by friends and family. At the very least, this so-called book club meeting will help get my mind off Cole walking away from me for a few minutes.
