Ella

We makeit back to the hotel only to find Robert waiting for us. He’s tense and avoiding eye contact. If Owen’s room flooded, I’m going to kick someone’s ass.

“I’m sorry to bother you, Mr. Porter, but I was told to make sure you got this message as soon as you returned. Mr. Harrington requires your presence tonight. He would like you to join him and some other employees during karaoke night.”

“Thank you, Robert. I’ll let Mr. Harrington know myself that I won’t be able to make it,” Owen says.

Robert grimaces. “I was also told that if you declined then I needed to tell you that this is non-negotiable. Failure to join your team for the night will be considered insubordination and possible termination may be considered.”

Damn, Jack really has a hard-on for Owen. I still don’t quite understand why he chooses to stay when there are so many other companies he could work for and still make a difference, but that’s not really my business. I just want to get back to the room and feel more dressed.

Owen’s jaw grinds together and he speaks through gritted teeth. “I’ll join them as soon as I’ve showered and changed.”

“Very well, Mr. Porter. They’re on the tenth floor, in the night club,” Robert says, and the relief in his tone is palpable. Jack must have scared the hell out of the poor guy.

Robert hurries off, and I follow Owen to the elevators. He scans his card aggressively, and I’m annoyed that our fun time—minus losing my swimsuit bottoms—has been ruined.

“At least he didn’t require your presence at something boring like cheesemaking,” I say to break the silence.

Owen snorts. “Cheesemaking?”

I shrug. “Been there, seen that. It’s not all that fun.”

“Right. Well, guess what? You’re coming with me.”

My head is shaking before he even finishes that sentence. “I don’t think so. I want to punch Jack in his balls.”

“Now that would be entertaining,” Owen says.

“Seriously. I’m not coming with you.” I cross my arms and take a step back.

Owen raises a brow. “Yes, you are.”

“No and you can’t make me.”

“Who didn’t want to bring any of their stuff with them on our walk? You have no phone or room key. The room is in my name. Unless you can track down Rosa, nobody is letting you in besides me. I’ll leave you out here in my briefs all night unless you agree.”

I narrow my eyes on him. “You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, I would.” His smile is sexy as fuck, but I try to ignore the tightening in my stomach his grin evokes.

“You and Kenzie would make excellent friends. She enjoys threats by blackmail as well,” I say.

“Then, I look forward to meeting her one day,” he replies.

The one sentence has my internal walls creeping up. Owen won’t be meeting Kenzie. He won’t be meeting any of my friends once we’re back home. I can’t let this week of magical fucking go beyond the island. Especially not after what I saw before our hike.

His mouth downturns, but when he scrubs a hand over his face, the sullen look is gone. As the elevator doors open, he tosses me over his shoulder and carries me into the hallway, humming while he walks.

Before I can object, his palm smacks my ass. “What’s it going to be, Ella? A night making fun of people by my side, or a night locked out of the room with all of your belongings just out of reach?”

“I don’t like you,” I grumble.

He laughs. “You don’t have to like me to enjoy fucking me.”

Wasn’t that the truth, but I knew it was also a lie. Despite what did, or didn’t, happen with Natalie, I do like Owen and his light personality and the way he always seems to know what I need. It’s damn irritating, but attractive at the same time.

Owen opens the door to the room and sets me down just outside of the door, but he doesn’t let go of my ribs. “Will you be joining me, Ella?”
