Nikandr nodded, shoulders hunched. “I hadn’t been spending much time with them. I was already scared. People were all so angry and desperate. The school was closed, and I started spending most of my days hiding in places where I couldn’t hear the shouts and cries and arguments.

“I came home one day to find my house under attack,” he went on. “I stayed hidden, but when I saw them drag my brother, Torrence, out to the street and cut his belly open for hoarding food when others were starving, I ran. I didn’t take anything with me, I just ran out of the city and into the forest.”

He paused to pour himself some tea when Kliment was done with the pot, then took a drink before adding milk or sugar.

Once he swallowed, he finished his story with, “I’m not even sure how long I walked through the forest before Jorgen and Hati found me. I know I crossed the river, because there were fewer people on the north side, then kept following it as I searched for things to eat. I had almost given up when they found me. They fed me and warmed me up, gave me clean clothes. I met Kliment. And when I was stronger and healthier, they took me to bed.” He blushed and took another drink of tea, with milk and sugar this time, then added with a smile, “I liked that.”

Avenel finished with breakfast and joined us at the table, placing a large bowl of eggs and sausage mingled together between us all. “Wait, they took you to bed? Do you belong to Hati or Jorgen?”

Kliment and Nikandr exchanged a sly, sheepish, heated look.

“We’re sort of all together,” Kliment answered. “All four of us.”

“If anyone asks, I belong to Hati and Kliment belongs to Jorgen,” Nikandr said. “But Jorgen and Hati were together before they found either of us.”

“They’ve been together for years, decades, even,” Kliment explained.

I smiled and relaxed a little as I started in on my breakfast. “I suppose it’s common for wolf leaders to have unusual relationships these days.”

“Yes, I noticed King Magnus has two pups,” Nikandr said.

“Oh, Peter and Neil aren’t his pups,” I said. “They’re his husbands. The three of them are married.”

“Do they do that in the Wolf River Kingdom?” Kliment asked, perking up a bit.

“It’s not usual, no,” I said. “But nothing that any of us is doing these days is usual.”

Nikandr laughed softly and shook his head. “I never would have imagined this would be my life just one year ago. All I was concerned about last summer was finishing my last year of school and deciding what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I am extraordinarily happy that I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I love having someone else make those decisions for me.”

“I know how you feel,” Avenel said, smiling as well as he cut up his sausage. “Not that I had to make many decisions to begin with, as a servant in Dunsk. But now that I’m Sebald’s pup, I love the fact that the only thing I have to worry about is pleasing my master and making his life easier.”

“Yes, exactly,” Kliment said with a relieved sigh. “I always know where I stand with Jorgen.” His mouth twitched into a smile as he added, “Or where I kneel.”

The four of us laughed—which felt odd and freeing and light. It was like a breath of fresh air to be able to joke about something like that with friends who understood.

“It was almost impossible to make that representative from Yacovissi understand that I actually like being a pup,” Nikandr went on, shaking his head with a smile.

I nearly choked on my tea at that statement. When had Nikandr had to explain being a pup to a representative from Yacovissi? Yacovissi was reported to be under Good Port’s control.

“How so?” I asked, fighting to remain casual. My pulse raced with the feeling I was about to learn something important.

Kliment and Nikandr exchanged another look, but they didn’t seem to catch on to the sensitivity of what they were saying.

“Jorgen and Hati like to brag about us being important in our old lives,” Kliment explained. “Especially when we’re around people from cities.”

“They think it’s a show of how powerful the two of them are that they can keep a merchant’s son and a former nobleman as sex slaves,” Nikandr added.

“Though does it really count as being a slave if we love everything about serving them?” Kliment asked. “Even the sex part?”

“Especially the sex part,” Nikandr said, snorting a laugh. “Hati and Jorgen make me so hot sometimes that I turn into an absolute cock slut.”

Kliment laughed. “I know.” He had genuine fondness in his eyes and a sort of randy innocence as he explained to me and Avenel, “Nikky likes dirty talk. A lot. And he likes it when Hati especially pretends to be really degrading to him.”

“Like how?” Avenel asked, interest sparkling in his eyes, like he might enjoy that too.

Nikandr shrugged. “Calling me a filthy slut, making me suck his cock and telling me I’m a dirty whore for enjoying it so much, making me beg him to fuck my ass and fill me with cum. Then belittling me when all of that makes me come.”

“And you like that?” Avenel blinked at him.
