“Max’s?”

“Sounds good.” When we were on the highway back to Annapolis, I said, “Hopefully, he doesn’t ask what we were doing.”

“You think he’ll give you a hard time for going to a yoga class on a rose farm?”

I chuckled. “I know he will.”

Her peel of laughter buoyed me, spreading the warmth in my chest throughout my body. Being around this girl made me feel alive in a way I hadn’t in so long.

I never felt this way with Delilah. I could see now that I’d used her as a way to avoid the pressures of high school. I never had to worry about having a date for a dance.

I ignored the niggling guilt that said enjoying her sister more was bad. How could something that was supposed to be off-limits feel so good? Maybe Remi was on to something. We should seek out what made us feel good, and right now, she was it.

“Can you put down the windows? It’s so nice today.” She smiled at me, and I was hesitant to say no.

I never rode with the windows down, but I was willing to try it for her. I pushed the button for hers, and she immediately placed her elbow on the door, letting the breeze whip the tendrils of hair around her face.

When she reached up to pull out the ponytail holder, I was transfixed as her hair tumbled around her shoulders. I had to force myself to keep my eyes on the road, but the vision of her enjoying the warm breeze, a soft smile on her face and wind in her hair, was a beautiful moment. One I wanted to experience again.

“Aren’t you going to put yours down?”

I shook my head, pushing the button for mine, resigned to the roar of the highway noise and the wind.

Glancing over at her, he saw her head was tipped back, and her eyes were closed.

“Feeling good?”

She opened her eyes, smiling wide. “I feel great. I had so much fun.”

She was ecstatic from spending the morning doing yoga on a rose farm. I got that the farm was beautiful and working out felt good for my body. It was the mind-body connection I was having trouble understanding.

“If something makes you feel good, do it.”

I felt good in her presence. Watching her move fluidly through each pose, each one effortless, the serenity on her face when she held a position. She sank into the pose like the instructor said and lived in the moment. Her muscles weren’t shaking, and there wasn’t sweat beaded on her forehead like mine.

She was in the moment.

I let the pleasure of being with her, observing her happiness, wash over me. “You might be on to something.”

“Score one for Remi?” she asked, smiling.

“You won that one.”

She patted my knee. “But it’s not a competition, remember? We were having fun.”

“What’s so bad about competition?” I looked over at her before returning my attention to the road.

“Wanting to win blocks your energy. It attracts negativity.”

“Huh?”

“When you focus on having fun, everything is better.”

“Sometimes I think you’re speaking a different language.” But I liked it and wanted to learn more.

She laughed again, the sound setting off sparks in my heart.

“Watching you do yoga and walk around a flower garden was the best time I’ve had in forever.”
