“You have no idea.”

The conviction in his voice sent a shiver down my spine, not from fear, but from the intensity of his feelings for me. He might not have said any words of endearment, but his concern for me told me a lot. I meant something to him whether he wanted to admit it or not.

I wanted love and a family. I just wasn’t sure if he was the guy to give it to me. For now, I’d revel in how good it felt to be in his arms.

There was more left unsaid between us. If the person who was responsible was a kid, I wouldn’t want him to go to juvenile detention. I’d want him to get help.

I’d wait until we knew for sure who it was, then I’d tell him what I wanted. Surely, I’d get a say in what happened. It was my store that had been damaged.

“You want to grab dinner and head home?” he asked.

“Where’s home?” I asked, feeling lighter than I had when he first came in to see me.

“Wherever you want to be, my place or yours?”

“I like yours.” It was a house compared to an apartment. “Besides, you have Scout to worry about.”

“I do need to take him out. You don’t mind?”

“Not at all.”

I closed up the shop, wiped the counter one more time, and put away the cleaned blenders.

“I’ll drive,” he said as we walked out.

I smiled. “You don’t like my car, do you?”

He hesitated, then finally said, “It’s not that. It fits you.”

When we used to interact, I was under the impression he was annoyed by me, but now, he seemed to like my differences.

“It’s just more convenient to take one car, and I get more time with you.” He lifted his arm in an open invitation to walk by his side.

Resting a hand on his stomach, I looked up at him. “Good answer.”

He smiled, leaning down to kiss me.

The smile and the move, so sweet and natural, yet not usual for Colton, sent tingles over my skin, followed by goose bumps. Our relationship was changing, morphing into something more serious whether we wanted it or not.

Something needed to be said, but not tonight.

He opened his door for me.

When he came around to the driver’s side, I said, “It’s a little weird riding in a cop car.”

“Have you ever ridden in the back?” His tone was light, but I knew my answer mattered.

“Just once.”

His gaze snapped over to me. “Are you serious?”

“You didn’t think I was entirely sweet and innocent, did you?”

He chuckled, shaking his head. “I shouldn’t be surprised. You were a little wild in high school.”

“I never got into any serious trouble. Just skirted the line. I didn’t want to cause any issues for my parents.”

He glanced uneasily at me.
