“Can we get closer?” she asked, finding herself drawn to the animal.

“Nay,” Conner answered. “Best to let it roam undisturbed.”

The sound of a twig snapping sounded like gun fire causing the stag to whip its head up. Olivia found her heart stopping a moment, wondering if the creature had spotted them. In a flash, the stag took off in a sprint, racing down the river and away from them.

“That was remarkable,” Olivia gasped as she plopped down in the tall grass.

“Have ye never seen one up close before?” Conner asked as he shifted to sit beside her. Plucking a reed from the ground, he fiddled with it and tried not to stare at her.

“Nae one that was alive,” she answered. “My faither would never allow me on the hunt. Said it was nay place for a girl. But I saw them on the back of the horse when my faither would come back.”

Olivia’s eyebrows scrunched as her lips pursed.

“What is it?”

“Come to think of it, the only time I ever saw one so close was after he had it mounted on the wall. Of course, it was only the head, but I never really thought they were that big, ye ken?”

“Typically they are nae,” Conner said. “That was certainly one I would want mounted.”

“Ye’d kill the poor thin’?” Olivia gasped as her heart sank at the thought of such a beautiful creature being killed. Conner shook his head and dropped his gaze.

“Maybe nae that one,” he answered. “That one is far too majestic to be killed for sport. Although, I’m certain another would have seen it as a prize.”

“The only prize is allowin’ such a beast to live. Can ye imagine the trails it has ran through? Or the fields it grazes from? I bet it has come from a faraway land.” Olivia threw her hand out as her mind drifted to fantasy.

“And what kind of place dae ye suppose a creature like that would come from?” Conner asked, tilting his head to catch her eye.

“Suppose the fairies raised him,” she said with a playful glint to her eye.

“I daenae think I’ve seen anythin’ more stunnin’ in my whole life,” Olivia said as she inched closer to him. Air sucked through her lips the moment her hand grazed over Conner’s. Glancing down, she noticed his thumb rubbing against her pinkie finger ever so delicately.

“I have,” he said, causing heat to rush to her cheeks. Conner turned to face Olivia. He slipped his hand out of her grasp and pulled her to him. Olivia’s heart quickened as he leaned to her and crushed his lips to hers.

It was as if her skin was set ablaze by Conner’s kiss. His tongue teased and taunted her as it rolled around her mouth, trying to draw hers out. Throwing her arms around his neck, she pulled him closer. The world could have fallen down around her, set on fire, or disappeared altogether but Olivia wouldn’t have noticed. All that mattered to her was the way Conner’s mouth molded and shifted around hers. It was as if he stole her soul and exchanged it for his. The exchange was quick as it stole her breath away.

“Conner,” Olivia gasped as she pressed her hands to his chest.

“Can I nae want ye?” he asked, pressing his forehead to hers. “Because yer all I think about these days. I cannae go a single moment without yer face intrudin’ into my thoughts. My body craves yer touch as if ye were the sun itself warmin’ me.”

“I feel the same,” she mumbled, “about ye. Ye are more than I could ever want or dream.”

Conner crushed his lips to hers as his fingertips grazed over her collarbone. The sensation of his touch sent her body into a frenzy. She tugged out of her smock and let the fabric drop at her feet. Conner stepped back, there was a hunger in his eyes that matched her own. Sucking in shallow gulps of air, Olivia watched as he lunged for her. Scooping her into his arms, he lowered her carefully to the ground using the fallen tree as a shield to break the breeze flowing through the valley.

Scrambling to get her dress over her knees, Conner shifted her legs apart and settled between them. Settling over her, she chewed her lower lip in anticipation. In one single thrust of his hips, Conner entered her. The world exploded with colors. Even the sun seemed to shine brighter as their bodies merged into one.

Clawing at his back, Olivia couldn’t get enough of him. All she wanted was to steal his soul out from him, yet she knew she couldn’t reach it without losing hers in the process. Conner’s heavy breathing filled her ears as her body rocked with his. Digging her heels into the soft soil, she gave herself to him. Every beat of her heart was for him. Every moan that spilled out of her was to serenade him.

Olivia didn’t care how much noise came out of her. With them being out in the middle of nowhere, under the blessed open skies, she knew she could be as loud as she wanted without feeling guilty about who was around to hear her.

Giving herself to him was the easy part. The hard part would come when he would slip back out of her, leaving her with a hunger greater than the one he quenched.

“Will it always feel this way?” Olivia asked as Conner dropped to the space beside her and stared up into the cloudless sky.

“Aye, I dae believe it will,” he said, stealing a glimpse of her. “I should thank ye.”

“For?” Olivia asked as she tried to regain her breathing.

“This place always held a special place in my heart. But I could never brin’ myself to come here after what happened to my sister and maither. And now ye’ve cast away the shadow that lingered over this land and made it whole again.”
