As if Sionn could read her mind, his lips curled at the corners to flash her a wicked and devilish grin. The sight of his face shifting into a convoluted smile frightened her. The fear was like talons digging into her flesh ready to rip out what was left of her frightened beating heart.

Olivia tried to control her breathing as the air in the carriage grew thinner. Her head spun around as panic took over. She bolted to the carriage door kicking and tugging to get it open. Yet, nothing she did opened the door.

Suddenly, the carriage slowed to a stop. Olivia’s heart rammed into her ribcage as she pushed to the furthest corner of the carriage. The clinking and rattle of chains scared her more than she would ever let on. Her mind raced, trying to come up with some plan of action for when the door flew open.

Olivia held her breath as she gritted her teeth. The door fell open allowing the sunlight to pour into the small space. The light was blinding and painful adding to the dizziness. Two hands stretched into the carriage, yanking her from the seat. Olivia struggled to keep her balance as the poison wrecked havoc through her body making every limb limp and weak. But she knew she wouldn’t be a helpless victim.

Mustering all the strength she could, she shoved her shoulder against her assailant and raced down the road.

Her legs wobbled under her weight as she trudged onward refusing to let up. It didn’t matter that the road before her shifted and swayed as if she’d spun around too much. Two large arms curled around her and dragged her to the ground. Kicking and clawing, Olivia fought back against Sionn. She knew that this moment would define who she was going to be.

“Get off of me,” Olivia growled as she drew her leg back and slammed her heel into her assalent’s shoulders.

“Brin’ her here,” Sionn growled as he hobbled to the edge of the canyon. Olivia was no match for the brute, at least not drugged as she was. Sinking her teeth into the man’s arm, he let out a scream and dug his fingers into her hair, yanking her head back. Olivia raked her nails down his face causing him to jerk back. He rose quickly to his feet, bringing Olivia up with him.

“Why are ye doin’ this to me?” Olivia cried as her scalp burned and ached from the nails cutting into her.

“What is takin’ so long?” Sionn hissed. “She is but a woman.”

“She’s a spiteful thin’,” the assailant’s voice hissed in her ear. She turned to steal a glimpse of his face and gapsed.

“Ye,” she growled wondering if what she was seeing was real. The toxin in her system gave everything a greenish hue to it. But she could have sworn it was Joseph who had his arms curled around her body.

“Why are ye doin’ this to me?” Olivia pleaded as Joseph retained her arms and hoisted her over his shoulder.

“Yer family took somethin’ from me a long time ago. And I waited and festered, plottin’ my revenge. I should thank the king though for suggestin’ such a union to take place. After all, he’s the one who delivered ye right into my hands.”

“I daenae understand,” Olivia cried as Joseph dropped her at Sionn’s feet. Sionn dragged her to the end of the road. He pushed her in front of him and grabbed her by the face. Olivia’s eyes widened as she noticed they had stopped at the top of a plateau. The moors stretched out into the glens as the mountains cut into the horizon. Olivia glanced down and chomped down on the scream that was lodged in her throat.

Jagged rocks littered the ground below her and at their height, landing on them would be fatal. Panic shifted to terror.

I daenae want to die. Nae like this, nae now.

“Of course ye daenae,” Sionn hissed in her ear. His hot breath on her earlobe made her shiver.

“Suppose ye never thought about my family,” he growled. “My lovely, beautiful wife, and child. Suppose ye have nay clue yer clan killed them. But now, now I get to take my revenge for what yer family did to me.”

“Ye daenae have to dae this, please,” Olivia begged as she tried to fight against Sionn’s push as he shuffled closer to the edge.

“Oh, let me guess, ye want me to think about the innocent bairn in yer belly, dae ye?” Sionn’s wicked chuckle terrified Olivia. “How their life will be stolen before it was even given to them? Well, what about my life? My wife’s life and daughter’s life? Yer people never thought about those things.”

“This willnae solve anythin’,” Olivia said, trying desperately to find a way to stall her execution. “My death will nae brin’ yer family back.”

“Sionn, stop.”

Sionn’s head whipped around. In the corner of her eye, Olivia noticed the smug smile drop from his face. Olivia turned her attention to the man standing before them, sword drawn ready and eager for a fight.

“Ye leave her be.”

“Faither,” Olivia gasped as she found renewed strength flowing through her veins.

“How did ye?” Sionn asked. Olivia grunted as Sionn’s fingers dug deeper into her skin. “It matters nae. Now ye’ll have to watch her die in yer arms.”

“I ken what ye think,” Niel said as he inched closer to them. “Ye think this is revenge, but all ye’ll be doin’ is murder. Yer family that ye love so much are still very much alive.”

Olivia felt the tremors of shock rip through Sionn. The tightness of his grip in her hair eased just enough for Olivia to take advantage of it. Squirming, she pried out of Sionn’s grasp.

“Yer lyin’.” Sionn’s face turned red as he stepped between Olivia and Niel..
