Conner kissed Olivia once again. He didn’t even mind the saltiness of her skin. “I will be back to check on ye soon. Get some rest.”

“Conner,” Olivia stretched her hand out and clasped onto his forearm. “I love ye and thank ye.”

“For what?”

“Nae givin’ up on me. For lendin’ me yer strength when I had none left of my own,” Olivia said. Conner stepped closer and drew her hand to his lips. Kissing his knuckles he stared deep into her eyes.

“Ye should ken by now, that I will brin’ down the moon and stars if I have to. Ye are my world and now, I have Niel too.”

“And yer maither and sister,” Olivia said with a whisper of a smile.

“Aye,” Conner said. “Them too. Now rest. Ye’ve earned it.”

Conner leaned down and pressed his lips to her forehead. Rising, he wished he could hold the image of her in his mind forever. Pulling in a deep breath, he smiled at her as Niel cried out.

“And the lad has yer lungs,” Conner said with a chuckle.

“And is just as stubborn as ye are,” Olivia said as she snuggled into the pillows and closed her eyes.

“She’ll be fine,” Astrid mumbled to Conner as he paused to glance over his shoulder to Olivia. “Ye have a strong woman who is strong and brave. Let her rest.”

“Are ye sure we all should leave her?”

“I’m certain her maither will be in here soon enough to watch over her as she sleeps. But ye must take care of yerself too. When was the last time ye got any sleep?”

“I’m alright,” Conner said as he realized he too was feeling tired.

“I have it,” Sadie said, climbing the stairs with a tray in her hands.

“Give some to yer brother,” Astrid said, “And ye and I will love on this bundle for as long as he will let us.”

“What’s wrong wit’ Conner?” Sadie asked as Conner noticed Damon leaning against the wall, arms folded over his chest. A mischievious grin stretched across Damon’s lips causing a chill to race up Conner’s spine. Conner had seen that same look on Damon’s face before. It was the kind of gaze that is tainted with lust and desire.

Conner shook his head and pursed his lips as Damon straightened the moment he noticed Conner glaring at him.

“Nothin’,” Conner answered Sadie quickly before moving to Damon. Leaning closer, Conner whispered into Damon’s ear. “That is my sister, and I’ll nae have ye look at her like that.”

“What?” Damon asked with a shrug.

“Ye ken what,” Conner said as he arched a suspicious eyebrow. “Ye think I’m nae aware of what is goin’ on in that head of yers? I’ve seen ye pluck lassies out of a tavern after givin’ that sort of gaze.”

“I cannae look at yer sister?” Damon asked as Conner arched an eyebrow.

“Nae like ye’re doin’, I’ll nae stand idle as ye try to steal my sister’s virtue.”

“I’d dae nay such thin’,” Damon said with a mischievous grin.

“Ye better nae,” Conner warned as he patted Damon on the shoulder.

“What are ye two talkin’ about?” Sadie asked as she skipped to Conner’s side.

“Nothin’,” Conner snapped, giving Damon a cautious glare.

Damon laughed and threw his hands to the sky. “Can’t blame me for tryin’.”

“Aye, I can,” Conner said as he noticed the playful smile Sadie flashed Damon. “And I will if anythin’ happens to my sister. Dae I make my self clear?”

“Aye, absolutely clear.”
