CHAPTER EIGHT

Nathan

By the time I returned to work on Monday, everything had devolved into complete and total chaos. All anyone could talk about was what happened at the Littles gathering on Saturday, specifically Georgia and how she was almost run over by the vehicle.

When I first arrived, I was hoping that everyone would forget about the fact that I had ended up asking her out on the same day, but based on the reactions I was getting, I knew that wasn't going to happen, so deciding to ignore everyone, I made my way all the way to my office, never saying a word to anyone until I was safe in my office. However, the office was not empty.

"Hey there, rookie," Chief Charlie remarked with a smile. He appeared to be in a good mood, but it was difficult to determine whether he genuinely was. "Do you have a few minutes? I have a few questions for you." Even though I had a bad feeling about everything, I knew telling Chief Charlie no was a death sentence.

"Of course," I said, hanging my jacket on the coat rack I kept near the door. "Please make yourself at home." While I approached my desk chair, he smiled and sat in the chair across from mine.

"So, I understand you're the man of the hour," he remarked, smiling up at me as I sat down in my chair. "Can you tell me about how you saved the woman from being hit by a car?" I stared at him for a bit, wincing as I tried to figure out what kind of reply he expected from me.

In all honesty, I should never have asked her out, let alone used such force that I ended up knocking her to the ground. I had a feeling that Chief Charlie was about to lecture me on professionalism and how nothing that had happened should have worked out the way that it had for me, but once I was seated, I saw something that I had never expected to see from Chief Charlie and all my life.

As he sat there waiting for my response, he seemed pleased that I had done my job so effectively, even though I was not on duty at the time. Most people would never have run out the manner I had to to save her, and it was quite unlikely that it would have ended out even remotely well at this point in time. I couldn't tell if he was pleased of the fact that I had been so quick to respond or if he was relieved that I hadn't been sued.

"So, have you talked to the woman you saved recently?" he inquired when I did not react immediately. "Everyone forgot to collect her contact information, and since we can't technically get it from Mikayla due to privacy laws, I thought you might be able to help us." I was initially perplexed as I tried to figure out what he meant, but when it eventually dawned on me, my mouth dropped to the ground.

Of course, everyone had been gossiping about me all day, even while I was on my way to work. How often did someone who ended up saving a life end up with that person? It was almost unheard of, more unusual than locating the ideal Little. What made matters worse was that word had gotten back to Chief Charlie.

"I'll see what I can do," I answered politely, smiling. "I may be able to have her come in and follow up on the police statement, but I'm not sure what else I can do." He paused for a bit before nodding his head in agreement.

"That's all I need," he comforted me, a sweet smile on his face. "That way, after we apprehend the driver, we may bring charges and have her appear as a witness. Otherwise, given all that happened, I'm sure the prosecutor would love to have her press charges." When the prosecutor's name is mentioned, I nervously rub the back of my neck.

"About that," I said, looking up at him, "is the prosecutor going to try to come after me?" Chief Charlie lifted an eyebrow and crossed his arms in front of me.

"Why the heck would they come after you?" he questioned, his voice genuinely concerned. "You've done nothing wrong. Technically, you were off duty the entire time and only acted in defense of the woman. The only way they can actually be upset with you is if you were on duty and ended up putting her in the hospital due to the way you knocked her down." I paused for a bit before nodding my head in agreement.

"Do you guarantee that everything will be fine?" I asked, genuinely curious. "How may I end up in legal trouble?" In response, he shook his head once more.

"You're fine as long as she doesn't try to pursue charges," he reassured me. "Based on what I've heard, I have a fairly good hunch she's not going to seek charges against you, which means they can't press charges against you." With that, he rose to his feet and made his way to the door. "Please try to have her in by tomorrow. Since they received the report, the prosecutor has been riding my back, especially since it's a suspect we've been looking for a long time." Rather than waiting for an answer, he exited my office and shut the door, leaving me alone.

When I was alone, I was able to reflect on everything that had happened over the weekend. I already knew that everything was going to work out for the better, especially after the date on Sunday. We may not have done everything exactly as they had wished, but we still ended up together in the end.
