Kiernan looked between Liam and the giant bowl of maple syrup. “I get you now, man, in a way I never did before.” He spoke solemnly.

Liam laughed. “I’m not that complicated.”

Saxon bounded up the stairs carrying a pancake cushion. “What’s going on?” His sneakers screeched as he slowed to a stop and took in the scenery. “No way.”

“Oh yeah.” Liam got to his feet. “This is happening.”

Kiernan nodded. “Calista’s quite the planner.” He stepped between her and Ronan. “And Ronan is the best Captain.” He broke their clasped hands and took Calista’s arm. “But it’s my bro Liam’s birthday, so Ronan will have to wait his turn.” Kiernan handed her arm over to Liam. “Liam’s taking Cal-cake down with him.”

“That’s not happening.” Ronan gently clasped her elbow.

More guys shoved onto the platform, making them shift into a tighter group.

“Oh, it’s happening.” Liam gently tugged Calista in his direction, he was chuckling. “My birthday, Captain.”

Two guys, Havard and York, carrying pancake cushions, barreled past Saxon to get to Liam, making everyone adjust their footing to make room.

York slapped Liam’s back. “Happy birthday, bro.”

“Gratulerer med dagen,”Havard echoed the sentiment in Norwegian. He stared at the bowl of maple syrup. “Eagle’s view of Liam’s dream come true. Good day.”

Liam dropped her arm to hug his well-wishing teammates. “Thanks, bros.” He sounded sincerely touched by their attention. The big guys made a festive huddle.

The mass of large athletic bodies had Calista stepping backward to give the men room. She was too close to the edge. One foot hovered over thin maple-scented air.
