A family of four approaches us on the sidewalk. The woman looks at us with a gentle expression and ushers her kids to the side to let us pass by.

I tighten my arms around her. “Believe me, carrying you around is no hardship for me. It gives me an excuse to have you in my arms.”

I feel her smile widen against my neck before she presses a kiss against the skin.

“I can’t wait until this is all over.”

“Me too, baby.” I grin down at her. “I’ll have to come up with more clever reasons to carry you around.”

Her giggle always manages to bring a smile to my face, and this one is no different.

Once we’re at my truck, I set Ally on her feet. After unlocking and opening the passenger door, I pick her up and set her down on the seat. She’s already buckled by the time I get behind the wheel, and her head rests on the window, her eyes sliding shut.

Gritting my teeth, I drive as slow as I can over the speed bumps in the parking lot. Once we’re out on the road, I reach over and take Ally’s hand. She peeks at me through slitted eyes and gives me her sweet smile. I kiss the back of her hand before I settle both of our palms on the console.
