What the hell is this?

I looked around for the reason for the blockade.

Still not many people awake and walking around on a Sunday morning. Lucky bastards that could sleep past 5:00 AM. There had to be someone who knew what was going on.

Finally, a middle-aged woman in jogging shorts and a lightweight jacket passed me, scooting around the barricades coming from the street behind the cliff.

I waved and caught her eye. She returned my smile, and I motioned to the rocky shoreline. “Is it closed for some reason?” I yelled across the sidewalk.

“Yeah, the police are finishing their investigation from Friday night,” she replied without pausing her power-walk.

Tilting my head, I peered beyond the orange barrels, going onto my toes to see if there was any sign of what happened.

This cannot be a coincidence. There is low crime-rate in this neighborhood, and they happen to be investigating the same spot I heard the ungodly screams. And I ran away… like a coward. Now someone’s hurt, or worse, and I didn’t help, again. Those creatures—the shrieks, those claws, and teeth—they weren’t just from the mountain, the claws were in my nightmares. They were one and the same.

Could they be real and hurting other people?

The bile and chocolate croissant rose in the back of my throat.

Choking down waves of nausea, I turned on my heels, peeling my eyes for the closest trash can. My legs ran of their own accord toward a large black bin half a block ahead. I approached the container and threw my full coffee and bag into it before bending over and emptying my stomach over the edge.

Something is out there. And it isn’t an animal.

I wiped the back of my hand over my mouth and raced home to find a very detailed map and what the hell I did with my cell phone.
