“Not really.”

I hadn’t talked about it with anyone. Not the therapists. Not Dad. Talking would only make me feel guilty.

“I can respect that,” he said.

I knew I liked you for a reason.

It had been so long since I’d been touched by a man. A real man. Last week, I got my hair cut just to feel another human’s touch.

That was absolutely not something I was going to tell him. I was here to protect him, nothing else. You need to get some distance from this guy before you make a mistake.

“I have to pee,” I said. I rose quickly and stumbled past Logan, handing off the whiskey without meeting his stare.

The rush of the whiskey was not enough to make me confess another word.

I teetered over two rocks and looked for a boulder in the distance. A large yellow stone jutted out of the dirt a few yards away from the trail. The wind brushed the back of my neck. The temperature dropped fast after the sunset. I trotted briskly to the largest boulder, shimmied my pants down, and peed in record time due to the frigid night air.

I fumbled with the button at the top of my pants.

Jesus Christ, get in there.

A spark zinged over my hand.

What the… not now!

Tendrils of lightning streaked over my chest and down my arms. I yelped, jumping back from the boulder.

I shook the angry streaks of white light from my arms and gulped. My head buzzed with energy. Panting, I leapt two steps away from the stones. The taste of nectar filled my tongue.

My head danced with pleasure, and my body filled with a sense of pure exhilaration.

I stared down at my arms.

Control yourself.

Opening and closing my palms, I turned them over and waited.

Holy crap, that worked. It’s going away. That’s the first time it’s ever listened to me before.

Soft, short pants left my chest. The sound of gravel crunching under heavy boots reverberated over the trail.

I turned and ran ten steps away from the boulder, away from the campsite. I needed to hide until this thing dissipated completely. I couldn’t go near Logan feeling so… excited.

The crunching of boots was on top of me in only a few breaths.

Logan appeared, towering over me before I could blink. “Are you okay?” he barked through the darkness. His hands ran up my arms and over my shoulders.

The warmth from his strong fingers seeped into my body.

Logan bent over, inspecting my face. He leaned over my shoulder to check the ground behind me.

“What happened?” he asked, gentler than his first question.

“Uh, I thought I saw a snake,” I said, gripping onto his wrists.

Logan pulled back slightly. “Did something bite you?”

“Um, no.” I tightened my hold on his wrists.
