“I’m sorry,” I said.

My eyes were cloudy. The cool air stung the back of my throat.

Logan was on his hands and knees, hovering over me. Both of his large legs straddled my hips. His hands held tightly onto my upper arms, and he was staring at my face. A deep frown lined his forehead. He was pushing my body into the ground, putting his weight into his grip. It felt like all of his bodyweight was trying to keep me underneath him.

I blinked and coughed. My mouth was dry, and my throat felt swollen.

Logan tilted his head and cautiously eased his grip.

I looked side to side.

The fire was out. Only a large pile of black ash remained in the middle of the orange stones. The sleeping bag was in a heap about two feet away from our legs, and five long claw marks were etched into the dirt to the side of my head, barely visible in the pre-dawn light.

I turned my head back to Logan.

He placed his hands along my side to bracket my body.

My dreams were so strong, the tether between them and reality was almost impossible to sever. Here and now with Logan felt just at real as Gray Eyes and the creature.

“Did I hurt you?” I asked.

The thought of hurting Logan made me want to lock myself away, far away from him and anyone else.

“No. You just scared the shit out of me. Not the first time this week,” he mumbled.

“I’m sorry.”

“You must have had one hell of a nightmare,” he drawled before reaching up to lightly touch my cheek.

“Yeah,” I said, brushing his hand away.

“What did you dream about?” He eased back on his heels, still watching me closely.

“I couldn’t explain it if I tried.”

I rolled my head and shoulders to release the knot in my neck.

“Do you always have nightmares like that?”

“I don’t know, maybe. What did I do?” I asked tentatively.

Please don’t say I grew claws and tried to tear your throat open.

I heard Logan’s deep inhale.

He paused and didn’t say anything.

With his mouth partially open, he roughly ran his hands over his beard.

“That bad?” I grimaced.

Logan dipped his head and looked at the ground. “Ugh, well, I didn’t know you were having a nightmare at first.”

Oh no...

“Well, you see, I thought you were just having a good dream…”

Gray Eyes.
