I ripped my hands to the cloth over my eyes and tugged. I tried again to pull at the well of light within me. Nothing was there. I felt so empty. So abandoned. Before I could remove the cloth, my hip ran into a hard, immovable piece of stone, jarring me sideways.
I tilted. My boots slid, and I fell onto the boulder, landing on my elbow and side.
Scrambling to put my feet underneath me, I heard gravel crunching. Rocks scattering under heavy boots.
The sound became louder.
They’re too close. I can’t fight them.
I stretched my arms behind my head to pull off the veil.
I have to get this off me. I can’t run with this thing on my face.
A large body hit me from the side, and I felt a crack as my ribs hit the earth in a shockwave of pain. Heavy breaths panted down on me. A quick prick of something bit into my neck.
The pants came closer as a sharp, male voice crooned, “You’re mine now.”
