Cat’s eyes glisten. ‘Really? You’re not just offering because we’re out of options?and time?’

‘No, nothing like that. I’d always intended to buy you whatever dress you wanted, and had we found anything suitable before now, I would have made the same offer.’

‘Oh, Mum.’

‘You really do look beautiful, Catherine. You’re going to make a stunning bride.’

Several tears spill onto Cat’s cheeks and she turns and hugs Mum. I love seeing them like this. Far too often, they are at odds with each other.

‘Hey, can we get some more prosecco, please?’ Jaelee asks the sales assistant. I suppose it’s a fair request when Mum is about to spend €1300 in their shop. I’ve already had a glass, which I finished four dresses ago, but I suppose a half-glass top-up will be fine before I drive us back to Montespertoli. The sales assistant, a tall, willowy blonde woman with a full face of expertly applied makeup, obliges us with a broad smile, topping up our glasses in turn.

When we all have prosecco in hand, Jaelee raises her glass. ‘To finding the perfect dress,’ she says. ‘Thank god!’ adds Cat. ‘I’ll drink to that,’ says Mum dryly, making me chuckle. Karen Parsons, aren’t you the comedian? I muse. We clink glasses and drink.
