“That sounds promising.” David flipped open the folder and started perusing it.

“Promising, but enough for a warrant?” Laura asked.

David didn’t look up. “We don’t need a warrant to talk to him. It’ll be up to him whether he wants to do it at his place or ours.”

There was a gentle knock on the door. When it opened, Harris stuck her head through the opening. “Hey, I heard my favorite ghost herder was in today, so I just wanted to drop by. See if I could get my fortune told.”

“You’re hilarious. Really, you a

nd David should open a comedy club. You could name it Tom, Dick, and Harris. You’ve gotta know someone named Tom, right?”

“Oh, yeah, Tom in accounting.” Harris snapped her fingers. “But he died. Think you could talk him into joining us, anyway?”

Laura threw up her hands. “Did everyone know but me?”

Cassie threw her head back and laughed. “Detective Harris, this is my sister Laura. She just found out my deepest, darkest secret about—” Cassie checked her imaginary watch “—ten minutes ago.”

“Jesus. Good thing I took a bathroom break on my way here then. How’d she take it?”

“Better than you,” Cassie said. “But it was a very brief overview.”

David checked his real watch. “How busy are you?”

Harris waved him off. “It’s just paperwork. Who needs to do paperwork? What can I do for you?”

“How do you feel about babysitting?”

“Do I have to take them both?” Harris eyed the sisters, and then pointed at Laura. “I’ll take her, but I don’t want the troublemaker.”

Cassie scowled. “Who are you calling a troublemaker?”

“You. Clearly. That was a distinct jab at you, Cassie. I couldn’t have been any more obvious.” Harris turned to Laura. “This one got me into a shootout a month or two ago.”

“A what?” Laura turned white and began wrenching her index finger with her opposite hand. “Are you serious?”

Cassie slapped a hand against her forehead. “Ten minutes ago, Harris. Ten minutes. We have to ease her into this.”

“Cassie, you mentioned ghosts. You didn’t mention bullets.”

David held up his hands. “Cassie and I are gonna go pay a visit to our new suspect. I’d love it if you made the less troublesome Ms. Quinn comfortable. She’s a psychologist, so maybe pick her brain.”

Cassie scowled at him, too. “Do I have a target on my back or something?” She turned to Harris. “Will you put in a good word for me? Tell her I’m brave and heroic.”

“Buy me dinner, and it’s a deal.” She turned serious. “Wait, does she have superpowers, too? Can she levitate? Freeze time? Throw people across the room with just her mind?”

Laura scoffed. “I wish.” She looked at everyone in turn. “But seriously, was I the only one not in the loop? If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was a conspiracy.”

“Please, don’t say the c-word around here.” David stood. “It makes people nervous.”

“He’s not wrong.” Harris opened the door and let Laura walk through first. “C’mon, Quinn. We’ll swap stories about Cassie. I want to know all the embarrassing ones.”

“Not funny.” Cassie shouted, but the door was already swinging shut.

“You know the drill.” David leaned back in his seat, eyes squinted, scanning the area.

Cassie followed his gaze. They were looking in the same direction, but for vastly different things. “Let you do the talking. If I see anything spooky, make sure I tell you about it.”
