“He looked like he could’ve been that age.”

“Did you get anything else from him? Any feelings?”

Cassie checked the time before she sat down on the lid of the toilet. Seven minutes left. “He looked sad at first. I also got a sense of remorse. But I’ve been having these recurring dreams about running my family over with a car—”

“That sounds pleasant.”

“—so the remorse could’ve been left over from that. But that’s not the weirdest part.”

“Well, don’t leave me in suspense.”

Cassie rolled her eyes. “He moved closer to me, and then the room felt like an angry oven.”

“Did you just say an angry oven?”

“Yes.” Cassie could picture the incredulous look on his face. “It’s the only way I can describe it. This feeling of intense hatred, this fury, filled the room. It crawled across my skin. Everything got tighter, and hotter, and I had trouble breathing. Then he just… disappeared.”

“Has that ever happened to you before?”

“No. I’ve seen ghosts interact with each other a few times, but this felt different. Like a demon or something.”

“Please don’t say that, Cassie. My heart can’t handle it.”

“It’s not a demon.” Cassie wasn’t sure if she believed that or not, but she tried to sound convincing. “But something felt off. This ghost, he didn’t look angry. He didn’t hurt me or even scare me. He just stood there, took a few steps forward, and then left.”

“Okay, we’ll mark that down in the column of Things We Need to Investigate.”

“What about you? Do you know anything about the body yet?”

“A few things.” David paused, and Cassie heard shuffling papers. “We’re still waiting on some reports. But that’s not the strangest part of this whole thing.”

“I never thought I’d hear you say ghosts aren’t the strangest part of an investigation.”

“The man we found this morning died in the exact way as a handful of other people—from twenty years ago.”

Cassie’s jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”

“I worked the investigation myself back in the nineties. It was like the past had come back to haunt me.”

“Interesting choice of words.”

He ignored her commentary. “I don’t know if this guy is back in business or it’s a copycat, but I’d love your insight. You got some time to stop by later?”

Cassie looked down at her watch. Time was up. “I…don’t know.”

“Not quite the answer I was expecting.”

“I know, I’m sorry. I want to help. Really. But with Laura in town…”

“Of course. I don’t want to take you away from her.”

“But?”

“No buts.” David paused. “However.”

“That’s just a fancy but.”

“However, you know we can’t put stuff like this on hold. I promise I won’t keep you for long, ok
