“Hang on, hang on.” Harris tucked her gun away and walked up to Cassie, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. “There’s no blood here. That’s a good sign. It means she either wasn’t here to begin with, or they took her somewhere else.”

“How is that a good thing?”

“If they do have her, they’re not going to kill her right away. They want something from her. We have a chance to get her back.”

Cassie opened her mouth to say that wasn’t exactly ideal when she heard a small gasp behind her. Harris’s gaze shifted from Cassie’s face to the open doorway, and her eyes widened. But before Cassie could turn around, Harris was shoving past her and sprinting out of the room. Without thinking, Cassie took off after her.

The detective was halfway down the hall. It hadn’t taken her long to catch up to whoever had appeared outside the door. It wasn’t until Harris grabbed the woman’s arm and spun her around that Cassie recognized who it was.

Rose Sherman.

She had red hair drawn up into a ponytail. Her face was bare of any makeup, and her eyes were puffy, like she hadn’t slept in days. Her outfit consisted of a maternity dress and thick leggings, with a cardigan and puffy jacket on top. By the time Cassie caught up to them, Rose was already screaming.

“Get away from me! Help! Help!”

“Rose! Rose. My name is Adelaide. We’re not going to hurt you. We’re here to help.”

The woman kept screaming. A few doors opened, and a couple of people stuck their heads out.

“Rose, I knew your husband. I knew Randall.”

Rose stopped yelling. Tears were tracking down her face. “You knew Randall?”

“Yes. My name is Adelaide Harris, and I—”

“Detective Harris?”

“Yes, I’m Detective Harris. Did he tell you about me?”

She nodded her head. “You worked with Detective Klein.”

“That’s right.”

Rose looked past Harris. “Who are you?”

“I’m Cassie.” She stepped forward. “I didn’t know your husband, but I was friends with David. Um, Detective Klein.”

A big man with curly hair stepped out into the hallway with just a robe on. “Is everything okay out here? Ma’am, do you need help?”

“No, I’m okay. I’m sorry.” Rose seemed to take in the hallway of onlookers for the first time. She raised her voice a little. “Sorry. It was just a misunderstanding. I’m okay. Thank you.”

A few people grumbled and went back inside their rooms. But a couple of the nosier ones kept watching. Harris gently tugged on the sleeve of Rose’s jacket. “Come on, let’s go back to your room.”

“Is it safe?”

“It’s safe. No one’s in there.”

Rose gulped but followed Harris and Cassie back to her room. When she stepped inside, she looked around in horror. “They found me.”

“Who did?”

“Aguilar’s men. How did they find me?”

“We’ll figure that out later,” Harris said. “For now, I think it’s best you come with us.”

“Where?” Her eyes grew wide. “Please don’t take me back to Savannah. The police, he’s got them on his payroll. They’ll kill me.”

“We’re not taking you back to Savannah.” Cassie stepped forward. She wanted to hug Rose but wasn’t sure how the other woman would react. “You can stay with us. In our hotel room.”
