“You all right?” I ask, concern thick in my voice. I wish she’d open up to me about her problems with Margret. An ominous feeling swells in the pit of my stomach.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Her voice is tight. “I was hoping Jace would be home already. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She jumps out of the car and heads toward the house, only to have the door fly open before she’s halfway up the stairs. After watching the last incident, I understand why Jasmine’s nervous about returning home, especially without Jace.

I’m torn, standing next to my car, afraid of what I’ll witness next. Jasmine’s obviously embarrassed and doesn’t want a spectator to her family’s problems, but I can’t force myself to leave until I know she’s safe. My inner voice screaming to help.

Once Jasmine’s within reach, Margret shoves her inside, and begins yelling before they slam the door closed. With the front windows open, the shouting is loud enough to hear outside. “Get your ass inside. I thought I told you to stop looking like a pig! I can’t believe you go out in public like this! Fat, good-for-nothing… You’re lucky your twin is better put together. So humiliating.”

I gasp, covering my mouth, trying to hold back the cry of anguish as tears prick my eyes. How do I help her? Maybe I can speak with Jace, see if there’s anything I can do.

The twins are tightlipped about their parents. Their dad comes to their practices a couple times a week but usually rushes back to the office afterwards. When we’re at their house, we stay in one of their rooms for the evening. Their mom’s only present during birthdays or bigger events, so we’ve not had much exposure. Their dad’s around more, but stays to himself when we’re over. I wonder if Alex knows the extent of Margret’s behavior towards Jasmine. I’d hope he wouldn’t keep something like that from me. If he does, I’m about to force him to tell me everything he knows.
