“Raincheck,” I whisper to her.

She remains silent.

Holding my ground for a few more seconds, I watch her, hoping she’ll give me something.

“Dude! Let’s go,” Alex orders.

“Okay, okay, hold your horses. Let me say bye to Jaz.” I make my way to the dining room where Jasmine’s helping Mrs. Navarro clean up. “See you later, Jaz. I’m going to chill with Alex for a bit. When are you heading home?” I want to make sure she’ll either stay the night here or wait for me to get back before going home.

“I’ll probably help Marisol with the dishes and then head home. What time are you going to come back?” She’s fidgety when she asks.

“I’d prefer that you wait for me,” I whisper, so only she can hear.

“I think it’s late enough that she’ll be in bed.”

“Okay. I know you don’t like to wait around for me. I just worry about you.” She leans in and hugs me.

“I know you do. That’s what makes you a great big brother, even if you’re only older by a minute.”

“More than a minute,” I remind her.

“All right, I’ll see you at home. Have a good time.”

Her eyes trace something behind me. I turn to see Alex with his most seductive smile plastered across his face as he swaggers over to her, wrapping an arm around her waist. “Oh, we will. Thank you for coming to dinner, chica.”

She laughs as she pushes him away. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

Alex retorts, “Well, you wouldn’t do anything. Get a little practice first.” He winks at her.

I punch him in the shoulder. “What the hell! Don’t talk to her about that shit.” He doesn’t need to worry about what she is or isn’t doing.

Wow, I’m such a hypocrite. The things I’d do to his sister probably couldn’t compare to what he’s thinking now. Goosebumps roll across my flesh, and my pants grow tighter.

“Whatever, amigo. Vámonos!”

“All right. See you at home, Jaz.” I turn to the kitchen and holler, “See you later, Mare!”

This party is lame.

Alex disappears into one room shortly after we arrive, coming out about an hour later, looking satisfied with himself.

I, on the other hand, am having a very uneventful night. Every time Alex mentions bringing one of these chicks to a bedroom, Marisol’s face pops into my mind. It’s ridiculous. We aren’t dating. Shit, we haven’t even established any sort of relationship other than our normal friendship. There’s just something there, stopping me. Twenty-four hours of lurker status, and I’m hooked.
