Page 45 of Their Broken Tears

We do not need words to interpret the heated look she receiving, saying, I’ll be back. Don’t leave.

She understands, because even if she doesn’t want to, her body responds with a slight nod.

The deck in the backyard is massive, lending the privacy I craved. Darkness embodies the night, not a twinkle or moon in sight. The air is revitalizing and smells of temptation and sin. There’s a hint of rain in the air that reminds me of my sister. It’s her favorite smell; right before a downpour.

If anyone can calm the inner demons that’re causing havoc, it’s my twin. The sudden urge to call her is so overwhelming that Facetime is clicked before I remember pulling out my phone. It’s been over twenty-four hours since I’ve last spoken to her. I don’t know if it’s the twin thing or the fact that she’s my sister, but I can’t stand the distance.

“Jace? Are you all right?” Her voice is scratchy, thick with panic, as she searches the screen through the ebon night for my face.

“Yeah, why? Are you okay?” Now my heart’s fluttering, quick as a hummingbird’s wings, wondering if my twin telepathy drove me to quickly call. Did she come home unexpectantly? I’m internally praying to whatever God is out there she didn’t. Even though she’s not confirmed, I’m mentally tallying the time it’ll take to get to her.

“I’m fine, but it’s one in the morning. You don’t usually call this late. You worried me.”

A relieved breath escapes. “Shit, sorry. I didn’t realize the time. Just needed to hear your voice. With the tour and…” I almost slip about Marisol. “I didn’t have time to call earlier.”

“I miss you too.” The smile is thick in her voice. “How’s everything going? Does Mare like it? Do you?”

“It’s perfect. The basketball program seems solid. Mare likes it too. The girls on the team are nice and showed us around. How’s Gran? You two having a good time?”

“Great!” she laughs, then lowers her voice, glancing over at our sleeping Gran. “She made me sneak her Chinese food again, even though I know the staff saw us. I’m glad I stayed over the weekend. When are you heading home tomorrow?”

“Not sure. We’re at a party right now, so it’ll depend on what time we check out of the hotel,” I chuckle.

“I was thinking about heading back around three or four, right before they serve dinner. That way, I can make something for us when you get home.”

I perk up at the thought of my sister cooking. “What are you going to make me?” I’m immediately hungry, stomach sensing, and growling like a monster looking for… well, for its last meal.

“I’ll surprise you.” She knows I hate it when she makes me wait, especially for food. “All right. Go enjoy your party, but no drinking and driving.”

“Yes, ma’am. I stopped a while ago, but I think I’m ready to head out. I’m going to go find Mare. Love you, sis.”

“Love you too. Night.”

“Oh, tell Gran I said hello, and that I love her.”

“Will do. Night.” Jasmine yawns through the last word and hangs up.

My phone goes black, then a picture of me play choking Jaz lights the screen, giant smiles plastered to both our faces. I remember when the picture was taken on our sixteenth birthday, right after we snuck up to our rooms to eat the cakes Jaz bakes each year.

Double checking the time and realizing the call took longer than expected, I head back inside, not liking the idea of Mare being at a party alone. Fuck!

Barreling through the backdoor like a mad man, I don’t stop until I glimpse her shapely calves at the top of the staircase with some douche-nozzle next to her, holding pinky fingers like we’re five-years-fucking old.

Hitting the steps two at a time, springing me to the top within moments, brings me to an empty hallway. There are five doors: three on the right, and two on the left. My girl is behind one of those doors with another guy. With that image pounding behind my retinas, my foot hits the first one, promising to kick in each one until I find her.
