Page 58 of Their Broken Tears

A blush stains my cheeks like Kool-Aid dyes the tongue. “I’ve missed you too. Is everything okay?”

“No.” He shakes his head, trouble dancing in his eyes.

“Anything I can help with?”

His fingers slide through his dark strands. “No.”

“Did you tell her… about us?” The question’s quite nervous as to the ears perking around the house.

“No.” His smirk steams with sexy.

“Then you better be careful greeting me that way.”

“Honestly, I don’t care. It’ll save us the hassle of telling everyone.” He wraps his arm around my waist and leads me inside. “Come and say hi.”

The stairs fly by as he guides me into his room, finding Jasmine sitting on the couch, watching The Shining. I tiptoe closer, sneaking right up behind her without her notice. She’s in the zone.

“Redrum,” I growl in her ear, while breathing hard.

She screams at the top of her lungs, throwing the bowl of popcorn all over the place. “Holy freaking monkey balls, Mare! What the hell?”

I can barely get the words out; I’m laughing so hard. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself.”

She charges around the couch. “I’m going to slap the shit out of you!”

Her advancement is halted easily as I hold the cookies out as a peace offering. “I come in peace.”

Immediately, she stops, snagging the cookies like a prized possession. “You are forgiven,” she states, opening the container, and taking a giant bite from one of them.

“Don’t eat them all!” Jace whines. “Why’d you have to give them to her?”

Patting his arm, I assure him, “She’ll save you some.”

“Don’t put words in my mouth,” Jasmine mumbles around the crumbles falling from her open moue.

Since the movie’s almost over, we laugh and binge the plate of sweets Jaz set on the table. Even though it’s the same friends, there’s a heaviness weighing the air into molasses. The secrets building like a web of lies, strong and waiting to ensnare, only to drain our essence.

Unable to handle the mounting tension, once the movie’s over, I jump at the chance to escape. Now that we’re home, the idea of waiting until the weekend to tell our sibling that we’re together is torture. We should have come clean the moment we returned.

But before I go, “Tomorrow, we’re going to go over your date options for the dance. Andrew still seems like the best option.”

She rolls her eyes at me, but nods.

Jace glances between the two of us. “Why the hell are you entertaining the idea of going to the dance? You hate those things.”

“Leave her alone. We’re having fun.”

Jaz smirks, “Let her have her fun. And you’re right, I don’t like them, so it doesn’t matter who she chooses for my date, I’ll still hate it either way.”

I glare at both twins, then threaten, “Don’t ruin my fun.” I point directly at one and then the other. “This is my second to last year. I want to pick a date, find a dress, create limo plans, and whatever the hell else I want to do.”

“Damn, Mare. Stomp your foot, why don’t you?” Jaz snarks in that sarcastic ass voice I love.

“Whatever.” The universal closing word. Then, “Love you. I’ll see you tomorrow?”

Jaz shrugs noncommittally. “Not sure yet. Still have a couple on the roster.”

“Text me then.” She knows I mean more than saying, hey, part of that heaviness I mentioned earlier.
